Job Description
As an Underwriter within our Excess Casualty insurance team you will deliver a profitable underwriting service to clients Key tasks include: underwriting business within the agreed business plan and individual authority; supporting the business planning and forecasting process; monitoring financial exposure within outlined limits; monitoring premium income to ensure it remains within set limits; maintaining awareness of all claims advised while supporting and providing input on settlement of claims; ensuring adequate reinsurance acquired to cover specific risks; building and maintaining relationships with brokers and clients; supporting the design and structure of risks

Review complex submissions including applications, policy wording, inspection reports, loss runs and financial reports
Proactively advise, assist, service and follow up with clients on insurance and risk management matters
Support the business planning and forecasting process; monitor financial exposure within outlined limits; monitor premium income to ensure it remains within set limits
Analysis and quantification of casualty risk exposures
Determine premium rates for individual accounts using analytical tools and insights while ensuring profitability
Negotiate with brokers on premiums, terms and conditions
Chair client-underwriting meetings with prospective clients and existing insureds in order to qualify inherent risks and exposures to the Company’s policies
Provide support to Senior Underwriters on selected accounts
Identify opportunities for portfolio growth through cross sell and upsell strategies
Work in conjunction with other team members to aggressively solicit new business and increase market penetration through the development of successful relationships with key brokers
Represent the Company at various industry conferences as required
Work collaboratively, assisting underwriters, underwriting assistants and management team
Complete ad hoc projects as required
What you’ll bring We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills: Some insurance experience
Casualty Insurance experience preferred
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
Experience with industry accepted policy forms, occurrence-reported, claims-made and occurrence
Robust interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively
Possess demonstrated technical knowledge and skills including product & industry
Possess analytical and problem solving skills as well as sales and marketing abilities
Possess customer service and negotiation skills
Organizational, time-management and multi-tasking skills combined with a Robust work ethic
Ability to work self-directed
Ability to respond to a changing environment with flexibility and innovation
