Job Description:

The Oregon House Majority Office seeks an experienced legislative professional as its Chief of Staff. This individual will serve as the top legislative and political advisor to the House Majority Leader and members of the House Democratic Caucus. The Chief of Staff will provide strategic support and advice to the House Majority Leader and the Caucus and assist the House Majority Leader in organizing the caucus and overseeing the development of policy and political priorities that reflect the vision and goals of the caucus. This role also helps oversee and manage the House Rules Committee agenda.

The Chief of Staff also provides organization, oversight, and general management of the House Democratic Office. In collaboration with the House Majority Leader, the Caucus Chief of Staff has hiring and expenditure authority and provides long-range planning for achieving caucus goals. This position also serves as a liaison to the House Republican Office, other Leadership offices and Legislative Administration. They also serve on a number of interim workgroups as a representative of the HMO

This is a full-time continuing position. This position will report to the House Majority Leader and have supervisory duties for the House Democratic Office staff.

The work of HMO Chief of Staff allows for some flexibility to work remotely dependent on time of year and business needs. However, applicants should be aware that the majority of work will be conducted in person at the Oregon State Capitol or other onsite legislative offices including in the Portland Metro Area.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE DEMONSTRATED WORK EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS IN:

  • Ability to work individually in a self-directed manner and as part of a team.
  • Ability to produce consistent, quality work under deadline in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside of normal business hours as the legislative session dictates.
  • Ability to manage several issues and projects simultaneously and to adjust to frequently changing demands.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Chief of Staff works in a partisan, political environment. Lengthy hours, including possible evening and/or weekend work, may be required, especially during legislative sessions. Daily use of a computer keyboard and monitor.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:

  • Over the next two years, the Capitol Building will be undergoing extensive renovation and construction projects which may limit accessibility to employees. This will require Legislative employees to work both from home and within the building as the construction project dictates. While working from home, personal, stable and high-speed internet access will be required to perform the functions of this position. There may be occasions that require employees scheduled to be working from home, to report to the Capitol or an offsite building. Every effort will be made to provide reasonable notice. However, employees may be required to report to the building under short notice. The Capitol building is located at 900 Court Street NE, Salem, OR 97301.

  • The salary in this job posting reflects the base salary without contributions to the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS). Employees eligible for PERS will have their salary increased by 6.95% and 6% will be automatically subject to a mandatory employee contribution to PERS.
