The Clinical Translational Research Site has an exciting opportunity for a Medical Assistant 2 to work full-time, on-site in Miami, FL.

CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant 2 performs multi-skilled tasks to assist the medical providers. The Medical Assistant 2 assists patients’ healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service. The Medical Assistant 2 provides hands-on care to patients while adhering to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures, under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician. The physician in charge may delegate the tasks to oversee the MA 2 to a Nurse or Designee in charge of the unit/clinic. The incumbent adheres to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, recognize, respond to emergencies, and demonstrate professionalism. The role provides care within the philosophy, mission, vision, and values, as well as within the policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami. As a professional, monitors the quality of care provided and nurtures a compassionate and healing environment. The Medical Assistant 2 works directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and/or the Designee in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure a safe delivery of care that supports the UHealth mission.


CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Utilizes creative methods to support patient’s individual needs and respect patient’s spiritual beliefs, faith, and practices.

2. Establishes a trusting relationship by creating and maintaining a conducive climate for healing by being authentically present to the patient and family, identifying and managing discomforts, providing emotional support.

3. Prioritizes and integrates multiple requests and work expectations by performing tasks appropriately, in a timely manner safely and professionally. Communicates clearly and in a timely manner to patient and family, as well as the appropriate team members. Seeks assistance when needed.

Learns and utilizes available technology resources for communication, documentation, and locating pertinent information regarding clinical situations, diagnosis, and treatments.

5. Attains educational knowledge and competencies that reflects current clinical practice skills. Demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning and is responsible for his/her own professional development and maintenance of knowledge regarding the patient population and assignments.

6. Ensures compliance with all State and Federal regulatory guidelines to include Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

7. Performs professionally within their clinical scope of practice skills utilizing State, Federal, and University of Miami’s standards, guidelines, relevant statues, rules, and regulations. Incorporates protocols and standards of care into daily practice.

8. Accepts and provides focused constructive feedback and guidance with loving kindness in a manner that provides growth and maintains self-esteem.
9. Abides by the standards for ethical behavior, therapeutic communication and protecting the privacy of patient information.

10. Assists providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment/exam room with proper supplies, instruments, and materials, as directed.

11. Understands the importance of medical and surgical asepsis. Prepares patients for physician’s care with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures.

12. Perform vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and document in patient’s medical record.

13. Cleans and/or sterilizes medical instruments while observing principles of sterile technique. Schedules patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work.

14. Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation. Orders, stocks, and inventories supplies, and assists in performing clerical duties.

15. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required

· High school diploma or equivalent

· Medical Assistant certificate of completion - Program or institute must be accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency, approved by the US Department of Education, or affiliated.

· *Credentialed Medical Assistant certification from a recognized accrediting or certifying body organization (See Certification and Licensing list below).

*Note: If the Medical Assistant has not obtained a recognized Credentialed Medical Assistant certification at the time of hire, certification must be obtained within 12 months of the date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Certification and Licensing: (Proof upon application):

Required

Medical Assistant Certification (Any one of the Certifications below)

· Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - Certification from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)®

· Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (Certification from American Medical Technologists (AMT)

· Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) (Certification from National Healthcare Association (NHA)

· National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) credential is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)

· Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) obtained by the National Association for Health Professionals. (NAHP)

Additional certification:

· American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers

· HIV & AIDS Certificate: Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continuing Education (CE) Certificate

Experience:

· 2 years minimum health care experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:

· Strong, effective communication skills with patients, families, and the clinical team

· Ability to adapt and exhibit flexibility to handle new, different, or changing environments

· Demonstrates strong time management skills to prioritize and act proactively

· Ability to uphold professional ethics and maintain patient confidentiality


 

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions
1.    Confirm valid signed and dated informed consent for each research participant from P.I. and/or their representative before beginning any part of the study.
2.    Provide direct research participants hands-on care in conducting the clinical study components according to the protocol (e.g., phlebotomy, frequent blood or another sampling, anthropometric measures, etc.).
3.    Assist with scheduling participant appointments to the CTRS sites and coordinating visits with other professional services.
4.    Measuring and recording vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, etc.).
5.    Assisting the physician or nurse with examinations and minor procedures.
6.    Preparing and maintaining examination rooms.
7.    Responsible for accurately collecting, handling, preparing, and shipping research specimens as required by the individual study protocol.
8.    Responsible for providing complete and timely reporting of pertinent clinical findings and results to PIs and/or study physicians. 
9.    Act as liaison between CTRS site and study participants, Investigators, and/or study personnel.
10.    Maintain accurate site documentation, including physician orders, nursing flowsheets, samples, and shipment logs.
11.    Participate in Site Initiation Visits (SIV) as required by the study team and/or sponsor.
12.    Attending CTRS In-Services for study protocols and team meetings.
13.    Maintain cost-effectively an appropriate inventory of clinical supplies for each CTRS site. 
14.    Submit required and requested documentation in a timely and complete fashion.
15.    Review/onboard clinical research protocols - laboratory manuals.
16.    Maintain compliance with the University of Miami and all Governing agency guidelines, policies, regulations, and requirements. 
17.    The position requires mobility across different buildings within walking distance. 
18.    Completes mandatory education and training that includes a review of specific needs and other competencies required by the University of Miami and UHealth system and other pieces of training. – ULearn, Citi Training, Bio Safety, Lab Safety, OSHA, HIPPA.

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
