Job Description

Position: Supervisor, Cultural Literacy and Lending Library
Supervisor:Social and Safety Net Coordinator
Work Site:Kirtland Family Resource Center and School Sites
Summary:Direct Supervisor: The Cultural Literacy and Lending Library (CLLL) Supervisor oversees the daily operations of a unique literacy center and lending library that serves as a bridge between traditional Navajo (Dine) knowledge and modern literacy development. This role is responsible for managing a specialized collection of books and cultural artifacts, fostering community partnerships, and designing intergenerational programming that strengthens reading and writing skills through the lens of cultural identity.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

Staffing: CLLL Supervisor will work closely with the Social & Safety Net Coordinator and Family Resource Center staff to manage, coordinate and oversee the Cultural Literacy and Lending Library, as well as sub-locations at district schools. 

Overseeing Program Design and Delivery: Ensures that program activities align with the organization's mission, funding requirements, and best practices in literacy for students, families and community. This includes reviewing and approving appropriate, culturally relevant materials, supplies, curricula, artifacts, programming, activity plans, and service delivery models.

Monitoring Program: Regularly assesses whether programs are being implemented as intended, identifying any deviations and working with staff and program partners to make necessary adjustments. The CLLL Supervisor will conduct regular (e.g. weekly or bi-weekly/as necessary) meetings with Social & Safety Net Coordinator to review progress with the following: 

 

  • Budget management, funding compliance, and expenditure processing
  • Managing daily operations of the literacy center, including supervision of center, hours, access, and programming
  • Create an inclusive repository of culturally relevant materials, including literacy and language resources, cultural books, music, indigenous films, and cultural artifacts, etc.
  • Incorporate Native American (NA) and Dine (Navajo) oral traditions, history, and teachings, while actively encouraging students, families and communities to engage in literacy events and activities.
  • Oversee the acquisition and preservation of both books and cultural artifacts. Ensure artifacts are stored, handled, and loaned out according to library standards and cultural protocols.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations (e.g. semi-annually and annually) with evaluator based on established performance metrics. These evaluations will identify strengths, areas for growth, and professional development goals.
  • Monitor deliverables of co-locators, cultural knowledge holders, cultural practitioners, elders, presenters, for cultural literacy and family engagement events.
  • Develop and integrate the Navajo Language and culture into the literacy events, workshops, and materials that will be shared with our students, families, and communities.
  • Develop a culturally relevant approach with a foundation that resonates with our participants, and one that teaches literacy by incorporating NA and Dine oral traditions, history, values, and understanding.
  • Develop regular evaluation and progress reports for programming (e.g. sign-sheets, evaluations, monthly reports, etc.).
  • Coordinate regular programming throughout the year, including seasonal, evenings, and weekend literacy events, Summer Reading program and Summer cultural connections. 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Literacy, Reading, Education, Literacy Instruction, or a closely related field. (A Master's Degree preferred)
  • Three years of experience in literacy programming, instruction, and intervention frameworks.
  • Three years of experience with direct program and budget management, supervision of facilities and staff.
  • Strong experience working with the community, building partnerships and coordinating family oriented engagement and learning events.
  • Strong understanding of effective literacy practices and strategies with research experience.
  • Technical familiarity with digital literacy tools, archiving, and resources (knowledge of library management systems a plus)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to develop educational programming for diverse age groups (K-12 through Elders).
  • Deep understanding of Navajo (Dine) culture, history and traditions.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and active listening skills.
  • Ability to build rapport and establish trusting relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness, with the ability to work effectively with the Navajo community. (Knowledge of the Navajo language a plus)
  • Proficient in computer applications (e.g. word processing, email, data entry, Macbook, etc.)
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check as required by CCSD.
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license and reliable transportation.

Physical/Job Requirements:
Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying up to 30 pounds, climbing, bending, reaching, kneeling, driving a District vehicle (valid driver's license and defensive driver training), traveling long distances, writing, typing, word processing, reading, researching information, and effective communication skills. 
Safety and Health:
  • Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions
  • Completed and cleared background check
  • Pass drug test if required for position
  • Knowledge and compliance with district and school safety plans
Equipment/Material Handled:
  • Multimedia equipment, including current technology
  • Equipment/Materials relevant to job responsibilities
  • Motor vehicle, if necessary-valid driver's license

 

Work Environment:
  • Work is typically performed in an office environment, client homes, and community settings.
  • Requires flexible work hours, including evenings or weekends, to accommodate family schedules.
  • Local travel within the Central Consolidated School District and potentially San Juan County may be required for home visits and community outreach and partnerships.
