Job Description

Qualified applicant must hold a valid/registered Illinois teaching license.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Confirm and complete all paperwork for practice locations
  • Send registration to all athletes
  • Observe/follow all area and state imposed deadlines
  • Familiarize/follow all Special Olympics rules for practices, participation, and volunteer usage
  • Attend training sessions to become a registered coach
  • Attend SIO certification workshops
  • Complete all registration for area meets
  • Complete and submit individual assessment forms for each athlete
  • Meet with assistant coaches; check to see if they have submitted the required paperwork to the coordinator/state
  • Obtain an appropriate number of registered volunteers for all practices and events
  • Inform athletes/parents of practice schedule/location
  • Practice
    • Set up the physical area with equipment
    • Develop the record sheets needed to obtain competition data
    • Assign and explain responsibilities to all assistant coaches and volunteers prior to each practice
    • Run each practice in a timely and sage manner
    • Collect, clean up, and store equipment at the end of each practice
    • Wait until all athletes have left
    • Adjust the scheduling of practice due to weather, facility requirements/closures, or personal conflicts
  • Complete State forms with data obtained from practice, observing all rules and regulations imposed by Special Olympics
  • Communicate the transportation, food, and scheduling needs to the Special Olympics Coordinator
  • Inform parents/athletes of transportation and event schedules
  • Obtain uniforms (all needed parts of the uniform), determine sizes, package, and pass out to all athletes, coaches, and volunteers
  • After receiving event schedules: determine athlete groupings, make coach and volunteer assignments, assign responsibilities, schedule meals (where to get food from and obtain money), and inform parents of individual event schedules
  • Verify transportation arrangements prior to event, assign coaches to pick up/drop off sites
  • Responsible for assuring that all athletes are appropriately scheduled, supervised and where they are supposed to be and at the correct time
  • Understand the rules and able to protest a result during competition
  • Collect data from competition and report it appropriately
  • Determine regional/state qualifies and notify their parents
  • Complete the process again to ready athletes who qualified for the next meet
