Job Description




Hourly Rate of Pay: Hourly rate is based on the college level they are currently in: 1st year (Freshman) $21.00 – 2nd year (Sophomore) $21.63 – 3rd year (Junior) $22.28 – 4th year (Senior) or Graduate Student $22.95

Work Days/Hours: Up to 15 hours per week, Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Some Nights and Weekends)

The City's Council Internship Program is designed to introduce College Seniors or Graduate students to potential careers in local government management. The selected candidate will work within the City Council's Office on a variety of special projects and research assignments with City Council Member Chelsea Cook.
 

  • Work on projects offering exposure to departments throughout the city, but primary assignments will focus on improved alignment and organizational measures of City services for populations of residents including children, families, seniors and youth and equitable housing affordability. This work may include conducting literature and best practice reviews, analyzing program data, conducting legal and legislative research, developing reports and policy recommendations, among other tasks.
  • Have the opportunity to explore City operations and services through tours, ride-alongs, and attending high-level meetings and events. 

Knowledge and Skills 

  • Must be resourceful and knowledgeable of community resources;
  • Should have a working knowledge of city systems and agencies to support resident needs and well-being;
  • Knowledge of the Durham community is required;
  • Significant experience working low-wealth communities.


Special Abilities  

  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with individuals and groups from varied cultural and socio-economic backgrounds;
  • Ability to be patient, flexible, and well organized, as well as dedicated to resident and community shared prosperity goals;
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours.
  • Candidate must be currently enrolled in a Master of Public Administration, Master of Public Policy, Juris Doctor or related program; rising juniors and seniors in public administration, public policy, or closely related fields will also be considered. 
  • Candidate must have experience and/or formal training in a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods (e.g. basic statistics, surveys, focus groups, interviews, and literature reviews).
  • Candidate must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of the Durham community.
  • Passion for housing affordability and sustainability.
