Compensation: Payband B £14.71 to £19.12 depending on experience plus 11.11% rolled up holiday pay
Description
The Historic Harbours Assistant provides flexible, ad hoc support to the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and safe running of Jersey’s historic harbours and associated marine areas, including Gorey Harbour and St Catherine’s Harbour, as well as supporting wider marine operations where required.
Ports of Jersey is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and management of Jersey’s historic harbours, marinas, and marine infrastructure. Due to the inherently variable nature of harbour operations—driven by seasonal demand, weather conditions, tidal access, vessel movements, and maintenance requirements—this role is designed to provide additional resource during peak workload periods.
Engaged on a zero-hours basis, the Historic Harbours Assistant supports operational resilience by enabling timely completion of maintenance and safety tasks, maintaining high standards of presentation and service.
Key Responsibilities
The Historic Harbours Assistant will support a range of operational and maintenance activities, including but not limited to:
Operational Support
- Assist with the safe and efficient running of historic harbours and marine areas.
- Provide general support to Historic Harbours, Jersey Marinas, and Marine Operations teams as required
- Support the management of increased activity during peak periods, particularly in summer months
Maintenance and Upkeep
- Carry out routine harbour maintenance tasks, including:
- Cleaning landing stages, blocks, and mooring pads
- Painting and cleaning railings and harbour infrastructure
- Assist with minor repairs and upkeep to maintain harbour presentation and functionality
Safety and Compliance
- Undertake regular safety inspections, including:
- Life ring checks
- Ladder inspections
- Support compliance with health and safety standards across all harbour areas
- Help ensure equipment and infrastructure are maintained in safe working condition
General Duties
- Maintain a visible presence on-site to support harbour users and operations
- Respond to ad hoc operational requirements and reactive maintenance issues
- Work flexibly across sites and within operational needs
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential Skills and Experience
- Practical, hands-on experience in maintenance, marine, or outdoor operational environments
- Ability to carry out manual tasks safely and effectively
- Awareness of health and safety practices in a workplace environment
- Flexible and reliable, with the ability to respond to short-notice work requirements
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Good communication skills
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Previous experience working in a harbour, marina, or marine environment
- Basic knowledge of harbour operations and marine safety practices
- Experience in general maintenance tasks (cleaning, painting, inspection work)
- Local knowledge of Jersey’s harbour areas
