Putnam Investments, a Specialized Investment Manager (SIM) of Franklin Templeton, is a diversified, equity-only asset manager with roots dating back to 1937. We manage a range of active equity portfolios with a focus on stock-specific opportunities. Our approach — stock-driven rather than style-driven — is designed to produce consistent outperformance, regardless of the market environment. As of June 30, 2025, the firm managed over $135 billion in assets under management in strategies covering the style, geography, and capitalization spectrum, as well as sustainable solutions. We offer these strategies in a number of vehicles to meet the investment needs of our global clients and investors. Available vehicles include mutual funds, institutional separate accounts, SMA/model portfolios, ETFs, CITs and UCITS.
Position Overview
This is a great opportunity for rising Sophomores and Juniors to learn more about Putnam, investment research, and career paths in the investment field. Over the course of the three-day Externship, in Putnam’s Boston office, candidates will experience first hand the day to day responsibilities of a Putnam Equity Analyst. Upon arriving, Externs are paired into small groups with other similarly hard-working, self-driven, and passionate people. These small groups are each supported by an analyst mentor who helps them leverage Putnam’s internal and external resources as they conduct bottoms up fundamental research into a company. Throughout the three days the externs will also have the chance to meet and engage with numerous Putnam Associates, Analysts, and Portfolio Manager’s. At the end of the program, each Extern group will present a stock pitch with a “Buy, Sell, or Hold” recommendation to a broader group of Putnam employees. In the past, the Externship has acted as a funnel into our full summer Internship.
The 3-day Externship at Putnam's Boston office will take place May 27 – May 29, 2026.
Position Responsibilities
Analyze a business and industry – Utilizing Putnam’s internal and external resources, perform analysis on your assigned company and its industry. Study everything from the business management team to their suppliers, customers, and competitors. Use this knowledge to make judgements about the quality and outlook of the company and industry.
Identify key stock drivers – Begin to apply your view of the company’s outlook to the stock price. Figure out ‘what matters’ for each stock and perform analysis to support your view around likely outcomes for the business and stock.
Present and communicate your findings effectively – Prepare a power-point presentation that covers the analysis you have done and the conclusion you have drawn. Communicate your thesis and stock rating clearly and link your conclusion to your analysis.
Education, Work Experience, and Key Traits
Previous work in Finance is not required or expected for the Externship.
Candidates with superior undergraduate academic records from all majors are encouraged to apply.
Self-driven individuals who thrive in an autonomous environment and are excited about the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
