The Chief Nursing Officer is responsible for the functions, activities, and training of the nursing services staff for the Extended Care Hospital (ECH). The incumbent plans, directs, and manages the day-to-day operations of nursing services for ECH and ensures a positive working relationship among the staff. |
Key Job Responsibilities

Essential Function |
|
Assumes overall responsibility for day-to-day operations of the nursing services of the ECH and, in conjunction with the professional staff, plans, coordinates, manages, and evaluates nursing programs and services of the ECH promoting a team approach to the delivery of patient care provided by the ECH.

Determines the types and numbers of personnel and staff necessary to provide nursing care for all areas of the hospital.

Ensures that the nursing personnel with the appropriate education, experience, licensure, competence, and specialized qualifications are assigned to provide nursing care for each patient in accordance with the individual needs of each patient.
|
|
Participates in recruitment and selection of nursing staff and, in conjunction with the Administrator termination when necessary. |
|
Ensures that the Hospital Quality Assurance Program and Employee Training Programs address problems identified by the Infection Control Officer and that a Corrective Action Plan is implemented as deemed necessary. |

Provides ongoing monitoring for compliance with nursing standards in practice and documentation. |
|
Ensures that the orientation and ongoing training is available to enhance nursing skills. |
|
Develops, reviews and revises job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel. |
|
Ensures timely and consistent screening of prospective patients in terms of services needed and nursing competencies required. |
|
Oversees annual review processes related to evaluation of staff competencies. |
|
Identifies a qualified registered professional nurse to act in the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer. |
|
Coordinates clinical program development with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Medical Officer and the nursing staff |
|
Provides guidance and counsel to the case manager(s) to assure appropriate patient volumes and diagnostic mix. |
|
Represents nursing at all appropriate meetings of the medical staff and Governing Board of the ECH. |
|
Maintains active involvement in local, state and national organizations as reasonable and appropriate. |
|
Maintains professional competence through continuing education and complies with all state requirements regarding the periodic completion of continuing education course work. |
