Job Description Objective The Library Assistant 1 performs paraprofessional duties to support the functions of Founders Library, to meet the library and information needs of SGU students, faculty and staff. Essential Functions Perform circulation desk activities including registration of users, issuing loans, checking in items, collecting fines and issuing receipts. Keep library statistics by recording them on the appropriate forms, in the stipulated timeframes. Examine returned items to ascertain the state of their condition, and replace library materials in the correct position on shelves. Read shelves to ensure that all materials are shelved in the correct position to facilitate ease of retrieval by library users. Assist users in accessing and using print and electronic information resources. Handle reference queries by providing answers to simple ones and referring complex ones to a librarian or a senior library assistant. Make bookings for use of study rooms using the designated online form. Supervise Teaching Assistants (i.e., student library assistants) in the performance of their duties. Assist in the marketing of library resources and services by preparing displays, brochures, and handouts. Conduct floor checks as scheduled, to count users, to monitor happenings on the floor, and to take corrective action to enforce library rules and policies as needed. Perform duties pertinent to the acquisition and cataloguing of materials as directed by the Faculty Librarian or designee (assignees to the Technical Services Unit). Perform duties pertinent to archives and records management as directed by the Campus Records Manager or designee (assignees to the Archives and Records Management Unit). Reproduce library material by photocopying and scanning. Send and receive faxes as requested by students. Undertakes special projects as directed, to achieve specified outcomes. Performs other related duties as required. Essential Knowledge, Skills Abilities Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with faculty, students, and coworkers. Ability to manage difficult or emotional customer situations. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to be well organized and detailed oriented. Flexibility, creativity, and good problem-solving skills. Ability to work flexible hours including evening/night, weekend and public holiday shifts. Qualifications and Experience Minimum of an Associate degree. Minimum of three (3) years' experience in a library or service type environment. Any other commensurate qualifications and experience Work Environment/Physical Demands This job is performed in a predominantly quiet environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. Although largely sedentary, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use arms and hands to shelve and remove books from shelves, lift books, other library materials and office supplies, and shift and move furniture and library equipment. Hours and Travel Founders Library is open for 7 days weekly including public holidays. Currently staff are required to work a designated 8-hour shift daily, as scheduled, during library hours, 8:00 am to 10:00 pm latest, for 5 consecutive days, followed by 2 days-off of either Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday or Sunday and Monday. Schedules are designed on a semester basis; however periodically changes are made, and staff are expected to comply with these changes. No travel is expected for this position.
