As the Metro Advance Transportation Planning Director, you’ll take the helm of the ATP section within the Transportation Planning & Development (TP&D) team. You’ll lead a dynamic group of planners and visionaries responsible for crafting multi-modal transportation plans that span urban centers and rural regions alike. From highways to bike paths, transit corridors to freight routes—you’ll help design the systems that connect people, goods, and opportunities.

Oversees the development of transportation planning functions in a metropolitan district. Reports to the Director of Transportation Planning and Development. Manages a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees engaged in transportation planning activities. Work requires contact with governmental officials and the public. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.
Essential Duties:
- Coordinates development of the Unified Work Program with MPOs and monitors expenditures of federal planning funds.
- Coordinates with staff engineers regarding planning operations as they relate to administration, programming, design,
construction, right of way and maintenance. - Develops and monitors the transportation planning budget.
- Oversees district participation in development, coordination and implementation of the Unified Transportation Program,
the State Transportation Plan and action plans for specific projects. - Oversees long-range and short-range transportation planning and coordinates with Regional Mobility
Authorities/Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) to develop the annual Transportation Improvement Program and Metropolitan Transportation Plans. - Oversees the administration of public transportation grants and related programs.
- Recommends transportation planning and development training needs.
- Responsible for the advanced transportation planning program in a district.
- Serves as liaison between the Federal Highway Administration and MPOs on matters impacting urban transportation planning
programs. - Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Transportation planning, public transportation, engineering. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
- 5 years of experience in d Transportation planning. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
- Must have three (3) years supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

information technology related systems - State, county and local government operations and metropolitan planning organizations or regional mobility authorities
affecting highway and transportation development and operations - Applicable contract/grant/funding/project/program processes, policies and procedures
- Applicable laws, rules, and regulations
- Establishing plans and setting objectives and goals that support overall business strategy/results; anticipating and
adjusting for problems/roadblocks - Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities
- Overseeing and coordinating projects and program activities
- Manages financial and personnel resources to achieve individual and organizational goals
