Job Title: Supervisor, Grounds
Pay Program: Support Staff, Non-Exempt
Pay Range: Range 22 $32.58 - $36.22
Work Year:  Year-Round (260 Days / 8 Hours)
Reports to: Coordinator, Maintenance and Operations
Direct Reports:  This position has supervisory responsibilities. Position(s) include: Irrigation Specialist, Grounds Worker, Pesticide Applicator, Heavy Equipment Operator, Athletic Field Painter


Summary
Operating under the general direction of the Director of Maintenance and Operations, this position oversees districtwide grounds operations, including landscaping, irrigation, playgrounds, and site improvements. This role supervises Grounds Department staff and coordinates daily operations, projects, and contractor work to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality maintenance of district properties. The position also manages budgets, work order systems, and long-range planning to support operational needs and district priorities.

Job Responsibility Description

1. Grounds Operations Management & Work Coordination

  • Plan, prioritize, and oversee daily grounds operations across all district sites.
  • Manage the district work order system to coordinate requests, assign resources, and track completion.
  • Coordinate multiple projects, aligning staffing, equipment, and timelines.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to ensure quality, consistency, safety, and adherence to district standards.
  • Identify maintenance needs, respond to concerns, and implement corrective actions.
  • Plan, design, and coordinate grounds improvement and construction projects in collaboration with county planning and external agencies, including development of scopes, labor and material cost estimates, and timelines.

2. Supervision & Staff Development

  • Supervise Grounds Department staff, including assigning work, monitoring performance, and ensuring adequate coverage.
  • Lead employee management functions including hiring, onboarding, training, evaluation, discipline, and termination in accordance with district policies.
  • Provide coaching, technical guidance, and professional development.
  • Ensure staff maintain required certifications and comply with safety standards, including equipment use and PPE requirements.

3. Grounds Maintenance & Systems Oversight

  • Oversee maintenance of district grounds, including landscaping, irrigation, drainage, and site upkeep.
  • Coordinate operation and repair of irrigation systems and equipment with specialized staff.
  • Oversee maintenance, repair, and lifecycle management of grounds equipment, including preventative maintenance and service recordkeeping.
  • Monitor playground equipment to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate seasonal operations, including snow removal planning and response.

4. Project Planning & Capital Improvements

  • Plan and coordinate grounds improvement and construction projects, including playgrounds, parking lots, irrigation, and drainage systems.
  • Develop project scopes, cost estimates, and timelines; monitor progress to ensure quality and completion.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, contractors, and external agencies.
  • Inspect and approve contracted work for compliance with specifications and standards.

5. Budget & Resource Management

  • Develop and manage the Grounds Department budget, including monitoring expenditures and variances.
  • Review and approve purchasing requests for supplies, materials, and contracted services.
  • Coordinate procurement of equipment in partnership with Purchasing and other departments.
  • Maintain accurate records of expenses, projects, and operational activities.

6. Coordination & Community Relations

  • Coordinate work with other district departments to support school operations and special projects.
  • Collaborate with water boards, irrigation users, homeowners associations, and adjacent property stakeholders to coordinate shared water use, access, and maintenance activities.
  • Respond to after-hours or urgent grounds needs as required.

7. Emergency Response & Weather Operations

  • Serve as a member of the district crisis response team, providing operational support as needed.
  • Support implementation of the District Emergency Closing Procedure Plan.
  • Monitor weather, road, and site conditions during inclement weather events.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Safety and Security and district leadership to inform decisions regarding school closures, delayed starts, and operational impacts.
  • Coordinate grounds-related response activities to ensure site safety and accessibility.

8. Event & Operational Support

  • Plan and oversee grounds-related support for district events, including high school graduations.
  • Coordinate event setup, logistics, and site safety considerations in collaboration with school staff.

9. Other Duties

  • Additional tasks, duties, and responsibilities may be assigned as needed/requested.


Education and Experience 
Acceptable demonstration of acceptable education and/or experience will be at the sole discretion of the District.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of five years of experience in grounds, maintenance, or related trades required
  • Minimum of three years of progressive supervisory experience preferred
  • Minimum of two years administrative experience; i.e. bookkeeping, budgeting, purchasing preferred


 Licenses, Registrations or Certifications

  • Criminal background check required for hire
  • Valid Colorado driver's license or valid Colorado identification required
  • Submit a current Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and meet the Colorado School Districts Self-Insurance Pool (CSDSIP) insurability standards at the time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain Commercial driver's license (Class A) - required within 1 year of hire. Note: Successful passing of a CDL- drug test is required for hire with subsequent random testing thereafter.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Lift test required at time of hire
  • Certification in Herbicide Application required within 6 months of hire
  • Certification as Playground Equipment Inspector required within 1 year of hire


 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices, including landscaping, irrigation systems, turf management, and drainage.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance practices, and lifecycle management for grounds equipment.
  • Knowledge of playground safety standards, site development, and basic construction practices.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, risk management practices, and safe work procedures.
  • Knowledge of project coordination practices, including cost estimation and scheduling.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, purchasing, and resource management practices.
  • Skill in coordinating with internal departments, contractors, and external agencies
  • Skill in budget monitoring, cost control, and resource allocation
  • Ability to lead and direct daily operations across multiple sites
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and adjust resources based on operational needs
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations and support district response efforts
  • Ability to identify hazards, follow safety protocols, and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to document work, track materials, and use the District's work order system.
  • Ability to be adaptable and flexible with collaborative critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
  • Operating knowledge of basic hand and power tools.
  • Operating knowledge of commercial landscaping and maintenance equipment such as mowers, trenchers, hedgers, etc.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, etc.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with office software to include Email, word processing and spreadsheets
  • District approved uniform and equipment is required
