Head Custodian (6-15 EE) (Evenings)
Position Function
This position is a working supervisor, responsible for direction of the school custodial staff operations, employee performance/ quality control, and anticipation and response to maintenance and custodial needs.
Essential Job Functions
- Trains and supervises the school custodians, assisting them when necessary.
- Assists Custodial Supervisor in recommending work assignments for staff.
- Evaluates building and grounds for cleanliness on a regular basis.
- Assigns individuals to cover special events.
- Orders supplies, and maintains sufficient inventory.
- Reviews/ signs and submits all required payroll documentation of staff.
- Identifies building and equipment repairs. Submits work orders to the Service Center.
- Responsible for the snow removal from the exterior entry door areas and exterior sidewalks out to the curb.
- Makes recommendation regarding annual performance appraisals of custodial personnel.
- Conducts preventative maintenance and minor repairs to building and equipment.
- Subjects to call for routine or emergency duties within the building.
- Other duties as assigned.
Equipment
- Use hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, and snow shovels.
- Use of personal computer.
Travel Requirements
Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Pay Rate
$18.90 per hour + .50 shift differential
Work Schedules
8 hours per day.
260 days per year
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to wear all appropriate safety gear, including masks.
- Ability to comply with the school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets.
- Ability to follow all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tolls and power equipment.
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
- Ability to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems as needed.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
- Ability to read labels on containers and materials used in the course of work.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
- Ability to process paperwork accurately according to standardized procedures.
- Knowledge of how to use equipment, and train others in the use of equipment.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Knowledge of safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job.

- Indiana Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
Education
- Ability to read and write.
Experience
- Previous experience in custodial responsibilities is preferred.
- Previous experience in management is preferred.
