Position Summary
The Contract Payroll Tax Compliance Specialist will support the Payroll Department with payroll tax compliance cleanup activities on a temporary basis. This role will report to the Director of Payroll and will focus on resolving outstanding payroll tax compliance matters, including state and local tax jurisdiction registrations, payroll tax notices, agency correspondence, and related research and documentation.
This is a temporary contract role expected to last approximately 3 to 6 months.
Key Responsibilities:
Research and resolve payroll tax compliance issues across federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
Review, track, and respond to payroll tax notices, agency inquiries, and related correspondence.
Assist with state and local payroll tax jurisdiction registrations, account updates, closures, and amendments.
Partner with payroll leadership, tax agencies, third-party payroll providers, and internal stakeholders to gather information and resolve outstanding items.
Maintain organized documentation of tax notices, registration activity, agency communications, issue status, and resolution steps.
Reconcile payroll tax account discrepancies, including agency balances, filing issues, payment issues, and account setup errors.
Identify root causes of recurring payroll tax compliance issues and recommend process improvements.
Support cleanup of historical payroll tax matters and help ensure accurate ongoing compliance.
Assist with special payroll tax projects as assigned by the Director of Payroll.
Qualifications:
Prior payroll tax experience required, preferably in a multi-state payroll environment.
Experience researching and resolving payroll tax notices and agency correspondence.
Familiarity with state and local payroll tax registrations, withholding accounts, unemployment accounts, and related jurisdictional requirements.
Strong working knowledge of payroll tax compliance concepts, including withholding, unemployment insurance, local taxes, and agency filing requirements.
Experience working with payroll systems, payroll tax service providers, or third-party payroll platforms preferred.
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple open issues simultaneously.
Excellent research, documentation, follow-up, and problem-solving skills.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and payroll-related reporting tools.
Preferred Experience:
Experience with multi-state employer payroll tax compliance.
Experience working with ADP WFN, ADP SmartCompliance, and Workday Payroll
Experience interacting directly with state and local taxing agencies.
Prior contract, project-based, or cleanup-focused payroll tax experience.
Hourly range: $50-80.00. The hourly range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skills, experience, training, licensure and certifications, practice area, and other business and organizational needs.
