Job Description

The goal of the Thornton Police Cadet Program is to develop, train and educate candidates for consideration of future employment with the Thornton Police Department as a police officer. The program will offer an opportunity to a diverse group of candidates to learn, improve and enhance their skills to become a police officer.

This position works up to 30 hours per week.

Performs a variety of responsible administrative support functions for all bureaus within the Police Department. 

Assignments will vary depending upon the need of the division(s) assigned to, and rotation in assignment between bureaus may occur. 

Maintains monthly service schedule for vehicles. Transports vehicles from the Police Department to shops. 

Provides phone coverage. Manages inventory supplies and stockroom inventories. 

Works with the Records Unit to perform tasks commensurate with experience or training.

Assists with Police Property Evidence handling evidence that has been booked in.

Assists during major case investigations. 

Assists with mail runs and distribution. 

Assists with department training.

Attends required training as identified. 

Assists other division cadets and department members when needed and there are no other conflicts with other assigned duties. 

Sets up and disassembles special activities or training events. 

Maintains clean/neat working environment. 

Attends ride-a-longs while in Operations Bureau.

May work a varying schedule and/or shift. 

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

Requires a high school diploma or GED. 


Licensing/Certification Requirements: 

Valid Colorado driver's license with safe driving record. Must apply for and successfully test for a Thornton Police Officer Recruit position by 23rd birthday.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the City of Thornton and the department.

Knowledge of basic filing and office inventory management.

Knowledge of internal confidentiality requirements.

Skill in accurate data entry, filing and retrieving files.

Skill in performing some clerical duties such as responding to questions and tracking files.

Skill in maintaining regular vehicle service schedules.

Skill in entering information accurately into a database.

Skill in the safe and lawful operation of a motor vehicle.

Ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment and software, including word processing, database management, spreadsheet applications and electronic mail.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to plan and organize time effectively.

Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, other agencies, and the general public.  


Physical & Mental Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to balance, sit, stand, reach, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift up to 50 pounds, twist, grasp, push, pull, talk, hear, see and demonstrate manual dexterity. The employee may be required to run. The employee is required to remain calm during stressful situations.

Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.

As a condition of employment, the city of Thornton conducts background investigations for all positions which may also include a review of credit report and/or driving record.
