Job Description
Come Join HII! Where Hard Stuff is Done Right!
We are seeking a Solution Architect to join the team and serve as a core member of the Strategy & Architecture team and a key participant in architecture governance partnering with external architects, Cybersecurity, and product/platform teams to ensure designs align to enterprise principles, target states, and portfolio roadmaps. The SA leads end to end architecture and design across applications, data, integration, cloud infrastructure, and security layers, documenting non functional requirements (NFRs), architecture decision records (ADRs), and reusable patterns that make delivery faster and safer. The role routinely prepares and presents solution designs to the Architecture Review Board (ARB) . SA works across a diverse enterprise engaging with teams from different divisions to build a cohesive architectural solution. Key Outcomes
• Approved solution designs with traceability to business objectives, portfolio OKRs, and target states.
• Accelerated delivery via shared components, templates, and fit for purpose platforms—fewer exceptions and redesigns.
• Reliability, security, and cost improvements with NFRs engineered in from day one (availability, performance, resilience, security).
• Cross silo reuse and reduction of duplicate platforms/integrations
Responsibilities: I want to and can do that!
Solution Architecture & Design
• Lead end‑to‑end designs across UI/UX, enterprise apps, APIs, data platforms, event‑driven systems, cloud landing zones, identity/zero trust, resiliency, and observability.
• Deliver core architecture artifacts: contextual/logical/physical views, interface contracts, domain/data models, sequence/deployment diagrams, ADRs, NFR catalogs, and runbooks.
• Extend reference architectures and ensure alignment with enterprise guardrails and target states.
Strategic Architecture Domains
• Workload Orchestration & Compute: Standards for containerization, serverless, and distributed compute to maximize scalability, portability, and efficiency.
• Enterprise Integration: API‑first and asynchronous integration patterns that simplify interoperability and reduce system coupling.
• Identity & Security Architecture: Zero Trust, IAM lifecycle governance, encryption standards, and proactive threat‑modeling guidance.
• Data & Information Architecture: Enterprise data strategy, unified data fabric patterns, lifecycle governance, and readiness for advanced analytics/AI.
• Connectivity & Resilience: Hybrid network design, secure interconnects, regional failover, BCP/DR standards.
• Observability & Operations: Enterprise telemetry, logging, and monitoring frameworks enabling proactive incident management.
Governance & Operating Model
• Develop architecture policies, templates, and standards to mature operating models and processes.
• Present to ARB, manage design stage gates, and partner with funding/risk functions.
• Operate within a hybrid EA model alongside corporate architects and embedded engineering teams.
Standards, Methods & Architecture as a Service
• Curate architecture methods (NFRs, ADRs, quality attributes) and deliver Architecture‑as‑a‑Service to product/platform teams.
• Contribute reference implementations and reusable components.
Data & Integration Architecture
• Strong command of domain modeling, REST/event‑driven patterns, ETL/ELT, API management, data governance, and privacy/security patterns for analytics and AI enablement.
Security, Resilience & Compliance
• Familiar with NIST frameworks (including 800‑171) and CMMC 2.0.
• Embed security and resilience controls in solutions; ensure regulatory and corporate compliance.
Delivery Partnership & Value Realization
• Partner with PMO/Product and engineering to sequence work, manage dependencies, and measure value through KPIs/OKRs.
• Support platform/vendor evaluations and investment cases.
Leadership & Coaching
• Mentor engineers and junior architects; facilitate design reviews and communities of practice to drive architectural quality.
Requirements: I have already done that or have it!
• 15 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 13 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 10 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 19 years relevant experience.
• 5 years in Solution Architecture with production delivery of complex solutions.
• Deep Azure experience and certification: Designing and delivering solutions using the components listed above; strong grasp of cost management, security baselines, landing zones, and platform reliability.
• Software Architecture & Design: Deep understanding of software and hardware systems; SOLID design, architectural frameworks (TOGAF, Zachman); ability to design scalable, modular, interoperable systems.
• Business Acumen: Align technical solutions with business goals; articulate the impact of architectural decisions on organizational strategy. Skill at producing and giving presentations (PowerPoint) to technical and executive level audiences.
• Project Management: Competence in managing timelines, resources, and scope; partnering effectively with PMO/Product Owners.
• Analytical & Problem Solving: Strong troubleshooting; ability to assess complex requirements and propose feasible solutions.
• AI Experience: Understanding of how AI operates and the architecting of AI pipelines.
• Demonstrated Experience: Several successful Enterprise Application architectures deployed into production in an Azure and/or AWS environment.
Preferred Requirements
• AWS and/or GCP experience and corresponding certifications (AWS Solutions Architect, Google Professional Cloud Architect).
• Certifications: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ 305), TOGAF, SAFe/Agile, ITIL.
• Experience in defense/federal or highly regulated industries; familiarity with compliance/assurance processes.
• “Full Stack” Architecture: Comfort spanning application, data, integration, infra, and security; able to dive deep with engineers and step back to business narratives.
• Methodical & Organized: Structured decision making, ADRs, NFRs, design checklists; consistent documentation and reuse practices.
• Outcome Orientation: Portfolio/OKR alignment, value realization, and cost/risk stewardship.
• Collaboration & Influence: Stakeholder management; facilitating ARB, cross team design sessions, and communities of practice.
Working Model & Collaboration
• Embedded within Strategy & Architecture; partners with Corporate Architecture, Cybersecurity, PMO/Product, and Business Unit leaders; participates in quarterly strategy reviews and ARB governance.
