Job Description

Position Summary

The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) supports the delivery of speech and language services to students under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). The SLPA assists in implementing treatment plans, documenting student progress, and helping students improve communication skills that impact academic and social success.

Key Responsibilities

- Implement speech and language therapy activities as directed by the supervising SLP

- Provide direct services to students in individual and small group settings

- Follow and support Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and therapy goals

- Collect data and document student progress toward goals

- Assist the SLP with preparing therapy materials and activities

- Maintain accurate and timely service logs and documentation

- Support classroom carryover of communication strategies

- Collaborate with teachers and staff to reinforce student goals

- Participate in team meetings, as appropriate

- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and district policies

Qualifications & Skills

- Bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program or related field

- Valid SLPA license issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR)

- Knowledge of speech and language development and disorders

- Ability to work under the supervision of a licensed SLP

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Understanding of articulation, language, fluency, and voice disorders

- Ability to follow treatment plans and adapt activities as directed

- Strong organizational and documentation skills

- Ability to build rapport with students, staff, and families

- Bilingual (Spanish) skills preferred

 

Working Conditions

- Work is performed in classroom, therapy, and school settings

- Frequent interaction with students requiring communication support

- May involve light lifting and assisting students as needed

 

Supervision Requirements 

- SLPA must work under the direct supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist

- Supervising SLP is responsible for all evaluations, eligibility determinations, and IEP development

- SLPA may not independently diagnose, evaluate, or modify treatment plans

 

Preferred Experience

- Experience working in school-based settings

- Familiarity with special education processes and IEP implementation

- Experience with AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) tools
