Position Overview:
The Senior Manager, Transportation oversees all daily transportation operations, up to 4,000 shipments per week, to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of goods. This role is responsible for planning and coordinating outbound and inbound freight, managing carrier relationships, optimizing routes, ensuring Department of Transportation and company policy compliance, and leading the transportation team to meet service, quality, and budget objectives. 

The Senior Manager, Transportation works closely with Warehousing, Production, Customer Service, and Supply Chain partners to maintain high service levels, resolve logistical challenges, and support overall business performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Optimize freight cost through routing strategies, backhaul opportunities, mode selection, and load consolidation.
  • Track and analyze transportation metrics (OTIF, freight spend, carrier performance, detention, trailer utilization) and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manage, coach, and develop the transportation team, including dispatchers, drivers, and third-party transportation partners.
  • Oversee all daily transportation operations, including scheduling, routing, dispatching, and load planning to ensure accurate, on time, and cost-effective delivery of goods. 
  • Monitor carrier performance, negotiate contracts and rates, and maintain strong relationships with transportation providers. 
  • Ensure full compliance with DOT regulations, company safety policies, and food safety/quality requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to align transportation activities with operational goals and service expectations. 
  • Identify and resolve transportation disruptions, delays, and service failures by implementing corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence. 
  • Maintain accurate transportation documentation, logs, incident records, and shipment data in TMS/WMS systems. 
  • Oversee fleet maintenance processes (if applicable), including inspections, repairs, and required certifications. 
  • Support budget development, cost forecasting, and overall financial accountability. 
  • Lead or support audits, safety reviews, and regulatory inspections related to transportation operations. 
  • Championing a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and operational excellence within the transportation team.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

Education and Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in transportation, distribution, or logistics operations. 
  • 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience in a transportation or warehousing environment. 
  • Experience working with a Transportation Management System (TMS) and/or Warehouse Management System (WMS). 
  • Proven experience managing carrier relationships, negotiating freight rates, and overseeing transportation budgets.

  • Effective communication and collaboration across multiple operational departments.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through.
  •  Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams). 
  • Ability to interpret and analyze transportation of KPIs (OTIF, freight spend, detention, utilization, etc.). 
  • Working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and documentation requirements.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 lbs. as required within office, warehouse, and yard environments.
  • Regularly required to work in both office and operational settings, including exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Must be able to enter trailers, climb steps, and navigate warehouse and yard areas as needed.
  • 10% travel to plant locations as needed

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Work is performed in a combined office, warehouse, and plant environment.
  • Exposure to moving vehicles, forklifts, trailers, dock areas, and loud noise levels when in operational zones.
  • Occasional work in hot, cold, or variable weather conditions.
  • May require early morning, late evening, or weekend hours during peak business needs.
  • This role requires the use of appropriate personal protective equipment. This including safety‑toe footwear, high‑visibility vest, and safety glasses whenever working in warehouse and plant.
