Educator Job Description
Reports To: Education Curator of the St. Louis Aquarium Foundation
Status: Full-time with benefits
Schedule: Monday – Friday (with occasional weekends or after-hours functions)
Organization Background:
The St. Louis Aquarium Foundation is the nonprofit partner to the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station, scheduled to open mid-December 2019. The mission is to engage the community through providing access and education programs and serving as the region’s recognized voice for water stewardship. The education, volunteers, fundraising and conservation programs are managed through the Aquarium Foundation. This includes managing the Conservation and Education Center, a separate, free-admission attraction at Union Station which showcases water conservation/educational exhibits, and our H2O Friends program, which provides free aquarium admission to underserved populations.
Position Summary:
The St. Louis Aquarium Foundation is hiring enthusiastic and upbeat educators to join our team! Responsibilities include implementing K-12 education programs, providing guest service support in the Conservation and Education Center, assisting with education curriculum, helping develop future education programs, assisting with tracking of education programs, and building relationships with local school districts and teachers (part-time positions will focus primarily on implementing education programs and staffing the Conservation and Education Center). This position will work closely with volunteers.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Lead engaging and interactive education classes
- Ensure all guests have a positive and educational experience
- Work alongside and provide support for education volunteers
- Assist Education Curator in tracking H2O Friends program
- Research marine life and water stewardship topics to ensure educational programming stays current
- Help oversee the Conservation and Education Center operations including providing excellent guest customer service, providing volunteer support, having a working knowledge of each exhibit, and ensuring the exhibits are in working order
- Assist the Education Curator in other projects as requested
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or a related science with experience teaching
- Minimum of one year experience working with youth
Critical Skills/Competencies:
- Proficiency in a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software (MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint), and social media platforms
- Detail-oriented, with strong presentation and communication skills
- Capable of being a role model for youth and facilitating a positive educational experience for all
- Ability to adapt and maintain flexibility in changing environments
- Help maintain a positive work environment and work cooperatively and collaboratively within a team
- Passion for conservation and marine biology is a plus!
Working Conditions and Requirements of the Job:
- This job requires occasional periods of standing and walking, sometimes outdoors; lifting objects; as well as periods of sitting and working on a computer.
- This job requires the ability to work effectively, comfortably and respectfully with all ages and a variety of backgrounds, races and nationalities.
- This job may include additional weekend days/events, and evenings.
