Position Summary
The Nurse Manager is responsible for the supervision, oversight, and operations of the nursing department and staff, ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment. The Nurse Manager provides direct client care, takes physician orders, prepares, administers resident medications, and coordinates outside diagnostic or medical services as ordered by the physician.
Relationships and Contacts
Within the organization: Maintains frequent and close working relationships with the facility Executive Director, National Director of Admissions, Nursing team, Milieu Supervisor, facility leadership, and Psychiatric Technicians.
Outside the organization: May initiate and maintain working relationships with clinical providers, referral partners, clients and vendors as needed and directed.
Position Responsibilities
Essential Responsibilities
- Provides leadership and supervision to the nursing team, to include hiring, training, coaching, scheduling, and performance management.
- Supervises Nursing staff, ensuring adequate shift coverage.
- Provides medication management oversite ensuring an accurate accounting of medication charting/procedures/training for all nursing staff.
- Manages the nursing area ensuring medications are secured at all times.
- Ensures all admission/discharge nursing duties are conducted and documented within required timeframes.
- Works closely with vendors and contractors providing clinical services (i.e., pharmacy, lab, biohazard pick up, etc.) ensuring proper communication and procedures are followed; provides account management.
- Ensures effective communication and collaboration between medical/nursing staff, medical vendors, and direct care team.
- Oversees daily vital signs, glucose monitoring, lab specimen collection and follow up, medication distribution, and documentation.
- Oversees medical issues daily and reports through appropriate channels, as needed.
- Takes medication orders from MD/NP conducts daily medication order follow up, and orders medication ensuring proper delivery from pharmacy.
- Maintains medical supply inventory and places supply orders, as needed.
- Ensures all admission/discharge nursing duties are conducted and documented within required timeframes.
- Provides medication management and oversite ensuring accurate accounting of medication charting/procedures/training for all nursing staff.
- Maintains biohazard accounts and procedures, ensuring team members are trained on and adhere to infection control procedures.
- Oversees all pharmacy paperwork/forms-includes controlled substances.
- Provides direct nursing care to clients throughout the treatment period.
- Completes comprehensive nursing assessments and assists in the development of a treatment plan, to include suicide risk assessments.
- Performs daily vital signs, glucose monitoring, lab specimen collection and follow up, medication distribution, and documentation.
- Coordinates external client medical appointments with team members.
- Engages therapeutically with clients in the milieu.
- Monitors labs/EKGs/other tests and communicating results with medical providers.
- Works with insurance companies on patient medications, completes insurance forms, and calls as needed.
- Participates in treatment team meetings and discussions contributing to the therapeutic care of each client.
Additional Responsibilities
- Functions within the guidelines of the facility’s Code of Ethics and in accordance with corporate compliance.
- Conducts chart audits following program policy timelines, as requested.
- Assumes assigned role in fire drills, evacuation procedures and internal/external disaster plan.
- Provides presentations regarding program services and participates in tours, as needed.
- Assists in outside and offsite activities, as needed.
- Consistently arrives to work on time, rarely missing scheduled shifts, and promptly notifies supervisor when absent.
- Demonstrates an ability to adapt to changes in the facility function, management styles, and facility routines.
- Reads, understands, adheres to, and models all company policy statements on ethics, conduct, and conflict of interests.
- Adheres to facility policies, procedures, rules, and regulations, implementing regularly.
- Maintains positive attitude and acts as a team player with others on the treatment team.
- Attends and completes all training within assigned time frames as required by the facility.

Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience
Position requires a bachelor’s degree in nursing, active state Registered Nurse license, and 5+ years of experience Nursing/Clinical Experience. Previous mental health treatment experience strongly preferred.
Physical Requirements
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to communicate with peers, clients and/or vendors.
- Job performance will require the ability to move throughout the building as well as participate in activities outdoors and off facility grounds.
- Performs duties that require the employee to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- May sit or remain stationary for periods of time.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to talk or hear, sit, stand, walk, reach, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, taste, or smell.
- Ability to move twenty-five pounds.
Additional Requirements
- Position requires incumbent to have a valid driver’s license, vehicle insurance and acceptable driving record.
- Clearance of criminal background, TB test, and any other mandatory state/federal requirements.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification

- Demonstrates ability to assess suicide risk and create clinically appropriate interventions.
- Demonstrates an understanding of identifying abuse/neglect in client population.
- Documents timely/thoroughly, follows format, satisfies requirements, and outlines plan of care/therapy issues, assessments, safety issues, and managed in a highly confidential manner.
- Completes comprehensive nursing assessments and aids in the development of a treatment plan.
- Demonstrates the ability to chart vitals, daily assessments, group notes, shift notes, and enters physician orders.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform physical assessments including vital signs and to recognize symptoms and distress of clients in treatment.
- Demonstrates effective verbal/written communication of clinical information during shift hand off.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform an EKG and sends to the appropriate medical team.
- Administers medications; provides education to clients and their families about medications; completes medication orders/refills per physician’s orders.
- Manages the nursing area including ensuring that medications are secured, and only authorized individuals have access.
- Demonstrates the ability to properly complete the admission and discharge process.
- Demonstrates proper management of biohazards.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform venipuncture and maintain universal precautions while collecting blood.
- Demonstrates ability to schedule lab pick-up and upload results in chart.
- Demonstrates clinical knowledge of specialized treatment; including established behavioral patterns (including age-related issues), therapeutic treatment methods and dietary/nutritional needs.
