The Director, Safety Performance partners with Regional Safety Directors and field leaders to improve safety execution and results across assigned regions. This role drives performance recovery in underperforming divisions, strengthens safety leadership capability, ensures audit and regulatory readiness, and uses data and engagement programs (e.g., Own the Moment and Safety Connect) to reduce risk and sustain a strong safety culture.
Responsibilities:
- Regional Safety Leadership: Partner with Region Safety Directors (RSDs) to strengthen leadership capability, improve safety execution, and ensure consistent program delivery and performance improvement across all assigned regions.
- Operational Safety Performance: Collaborate with RSDs and field leadership to analyze incident trends, deploy targeted risk reduction strategies, and leverage Own the Moment engagement to drive measurable improvements in safety outcomes.
- Compliance, Audit & Regulatory Oversight: Support execution of division audits and ensure compliance with all safety requirements while partnering with Legal and regulatory agencies.
- Division Performance Recovery: Identify gaps, implement improvement strategies, and support recovery in underperforming divisions.
- Regional Field Governance: Establish structured operating cadence to drive alignment, accountability, and performance management.
- Training Alignment & Execution: Ensure training programs and certifications are effectively delivered and improving performance.
- Client & Division Issue Resolution: Coordinate responses to client escalations and ensure sustained corrective actions.
- Safety Engagement & Culture: Drive initiatives such as Safety Connect and Own the Moment to strengthen culture.
- Performance Analytics & Continuous Improvement: Use data and KPIs to identify risks and drive improvements.
- Safety Manager Talent Development & Onboarding: Support recruitment, onboarding, and development of Safety Managers.
- Pilot Program Implementation: Lead testing and scaling of safety initiatives across regions.
Talent Requirements
- 7+ years of progressively responsible safety and/or operations leadership experience in transit, transportation, logistics, or a comparable operational environment.
- Demonstrated success improving safety performance through targeted risk reduction strategies, field execution, and sustained leader engagement.
- Working knowledge of applicable regulatory and client requirements (e.g., OSHA/Cal/OSHA, DOT/FTA principles, SMS concepts), audits, and corrective action management.
- Experience partnering cross-functionally (Operations, Training, HR, Legal, Claims, and clients) to resolve escalations and drive measurable outcomes.
- Bachelor’s degree in safety, Industrial Hygiene, Business, or related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
- Safety leadership and coaching builds capability, sets expectations, and drives accountability through consistent field routines.
- Analytical and data fluency interprets trends, uses KPIs/dashboards, and translates insights into practical actions.
- Communication and influence: strong executive presence, clear written/verbal communication, and ability to gain alignment without direct authority.
- Problem solving and execution prioritize effectively, removes barriers, and delivers timely corrective actions in fast-moving environments.
