Senior Developer Experience Engineer

If watching a team get blocked for hours by busted tooling makes you want to fix it, not just complain about it, this role is for you.

We're hiring a Senior Developer Experience Engineer to own the tooling and systems that thousands of IDEXX engineers depend on to ship safely and fast. You'll treat internal engineers as customers and obsess about their experience.

You'll own and evolve our internal tooling, CI/CD pipelines, test infrastructure, observability, and developer environments. You'll help teams transition to agentic engineering, including Claude Code, Cursor, and the next wave of agentic tools. Your work compounds: one good DevEx decision saves every team time forever.

Auckland is home to IDEXX's global Software Centre of Excellence, where we design, build, and operate cloud-native systems supporting veterinary professionals worldwide.

You'll work across developer tooling, CI/CD, test infrastructure, and internal systems, with Go, TypeScript, AWS, and Terraform. This is a hands-on role with real ownership: you'll design solutions and drive standards across engineering.

So what are we looking for?

• Improve developer workflows and tooling

• Own observability strategy and rollout (Datadog dashboard, monitors, APM)

• Identify patterns, reduce friction, and drive standardisation across engineering teams

• Actively contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing across teams to uplift engineering capability

• Enhance CI/CD pipelines, development environments, and internal platforms

• Design and build solutions using AWS cloud services and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform)

• Contribute to architectural decisions supporting scalability, performance, and reliability

• Help evolve a successful monolithic system toward more modular, domain-oriented architectures

• Build systems that are observable, resilient, and easy to operate at scale

• Contribute to embedding AI capabilities into both product features and developer workflows

• Experiment with emerging tools in agentic engineering (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Figma Make)

• Identify opportunities to automate and improve efficiency across engineering processes

• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code

• Contribute to strong engineering practices including automated testing, CI/CD, and DevSecOps

What you will bring:

• Solid experience with modern stacks such as Go, TypeScript, PHP, or other languages

• Strong experience working with AWS and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform)

• Deep understanding of cloud-native architectures, distributed systems, and modern software design

• Ability to communicate clearly, plan effectively, estimate work, and deliver outcomes independently while contributing to a high performing team

• Passion for developer experience, knowledge sharing, and improving engineering practices

• Bias toward simplicity and reliability: ability to choose the boring, robust solution over the clever one

• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to recognise patterns and optimise systems and workflows

• Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, and DevSecOps practices

• Experience working in fast paced environments, delivering thin slices iteratively
