Job Description

Summary

This position performs General diagnostic ultrasound testing such as Abdominal, OB/GYN, and small parts examinations. An Ultrasound Technologist General is a Diagnostic Ultrasound Professional that is qualified by professional credentialing, academic, and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice of the Ultrasound Technologist includes those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience, has demonstrated competency, and has completed the appropriate ARDMS specialty certification(s) which is the standard of practice in ultrasound. The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating findings of diagnostic examinations using sonography as appropriate. The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for daily operations of the ultrasound lab, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). The sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to pursue lifelong learning to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve.


Responsibilities

(35%)*Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations according to defined imaging protocols.

 

(25%)*Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.

 

(10%)*Prepares equipment and supplies; observes sterile techniques; assists physician as needed.

 

(25%)*Prepares equipment for ordered exam; transports patients as needed; explains procedure to patient; performs exam; records exam; consults with radiologist as needed.

 

(5%)* Supervises and trains student sonographers by monitoring and reporting progress of student to program coordinator, department manager, and student.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.

 

Analyze sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.

 

Provides ultrasound guidance for biopsies/aspirations.

 

Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the ultrasound technologists care.

 

Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area and adequate supplies.

 

Provides excellent customer service.

 

Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times toward all employees, physicians, associated staff and MyMichigan Health customers and potential customers.

 

Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends/participates in departmental and medical center meetings.

 

Performs other work-related duties as assigned including assisting in other areas of the department as needed.

 

Provides department specific on call related duties days, evenings, and weekends as assigned.

Certifications and Licensures

ARDMS AB - Abdominal Ultrasound Tech

Required Equivalent Experience - Ultrasound technologists performing general ultrasound imaging, including abdomen, small parts, and obstetrics/gynecology, must obtain and maintain active certifications by the ARDMS in Abdomen and OB/GYN specialties within one year of the date of hire. Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate and ARDMS or CCI re-credentialing yearly requirements to maintain active registrant status 

 

 

ARDMS OBGY - OB/GYN Ultrasound Tech

Required Equivalent Experience - Ultrasound technologists performing general ultrasound imaging, including abdomen, small parts, and obstetrics/gynecology, must obtain and maintain active certifications by the ARDMS in Abdomen and OB/GYN specialties within one year of the date of hire 

 

 

BLS - Basic Life Support

Required Equivalent Experience - Within 30 days of hire or transfer 

 

ULTRA C I - ARDMS-RVT OR CCI-RVS

Preferred Equivalent Experience - Registered or registry eligible in Vascular Ultrasound RVT. Must obtain certification within 18 months of hire or transfer 


Required Education

Education: Associates Degree  

Equivalent Experience: Associate of Science or health care related field is preferred. One year work experience in a hospital setting is preferred. One year full time work experience preferred.

Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate and ARDMS re-credentialing yearly requirements to maintain active registrant status.

 

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner in person and by phone.

 

Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must also be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

 

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

 

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

 

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

 

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

 

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

 

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

 

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

 

Physical Demand Level:Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
