Utilities Systems Engineer

Job Description

The NSLS-II Mechanical Engineering Group has an opening for a Mechanical Utility Engineer (P7-P9) position. The candidate will supply engineering support for the design and maintenance of the mechanical utility systems for the NSLS-II Accelerator Division. The mechanical utility systems include deionized water (DI), processed chilled water, hot water, compressed air, and HVAC systems. The Deionized water and HVAC systems directly control the temperature of the NSLS-II magnet system and have stringent high accuracy requirements for temperature.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering support for all aspects of the NSLS-II mechanical utility systems.

  • Develop plans to start-up, test, and verify that system performance meets the needs of facility.

  • Provide oversight of DI water distribution systems, compressed air systems, chilled water systems to maintain designed performance criteria.

  • Document, procure and maintain spare part inventory.

  • Maintain and implement safety practices and procedures applicable to daily activities.

    • Design, oversee and manage utility system installations:

    • Provide labor, material, and schedule estimates for proposed mechanical development projects.

    • Provide SOW and specifications for mechanical installations required for bid.

    • Oversee the design, procurement, and fabrication of mechanical installations.

    • Oversee the commissioning of mechanical installations.

    • Oversee the creation of P&ID drawings on new and existing mechanical installations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or closely related field of study. Minimum seven (7) years progressively responsible related work experience that demonstrates a sound knowledge of current principles and practices in a specialized field of engineering.

  • Strong knowledge of hot water and chilled water hydronic systems, HVAC and compressed air distribution systems.

  • Ability to perform design responsibilities for a project from conception to completion.

  • Experience in using design tools for performing energy load calculations.

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD 2D & 3D modeling or similar for the design and layout of equipment, duct and piping systems.

  • Experience in developing a comprehensive maintenance program for mechanical utility systems.

  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff.

  • Strong technical writing skills and experience with spreadsheets.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Experience in one or more of the following:

  •  (10) years progressively responsible related work experience which demonstrates advanced capabilities and use of sophisticated engineering approaches.

  • Experience with Revit 3D design software.

  • Master’s degree or Professional Engineer license.

  • Knowledge of Allen Bradly or Automated logic control systems. 

  • Experience working with large facilities.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Office work, Able to hear and speak, Able to see color, Able to walk and climb stairs.

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.

  • Continuous walking / standing.

  • Must be able to climb a ladder and work at heights up to 30 feet.

  • Ability to speak, hear and understand speech.

  • Hand / eye coordination.

  • Good vision and hand dexterity.

  • Will be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights and/or weekends to support mission critical projects.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $113,050.00 - $163,617.00 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.  Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
