Overview

The Utilities Technician is responsible for maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting critical utility systems across multiple food manufacturing facilities. This role ensures reliable performance of wastewater treatment systems, boilers, engine room equipment, compressed air, refrigeration, and material-handling assets such as forklifts. The technician supports production uptime, regulatory compliance, and safe operations while traveling between assigned plants as needed.


Responsibilities

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain wastewater treatment systems, including pumps, screens, clarifiers, chemical dosing, and sampling.

  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on boilers, steam systems, feedwater equipment, and condensate return systems.

  • Support engine room operations, including ammonia or Freon refrigeration systems, compressors, condensers, cooling towers, and associated controls.

  • Maintain compressed air systems, vacuum systems, and other plant utilities.

     

  • Conduct daily rounds, log readings, and respond to alarms or abnormal conditions.

     

  • Ensure all utility systems meet EPA, state environmental, and local wastewater discharge requirements.

     

  • Maintain documentation for inspections, permits, sampling, and regulatory reporting.

     

  • Follow GMPs, sanitation standards, and food-safety protocols when working in production areas.

     

  • Support internal and external audits related to utilities, environmental compliance, and safety.

     

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on forklifts, pallet jacks, and other powered industrial trucks.

     

  • Conduct safety inspections, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues, and coordinate major repairs with vendors.

     

  • Ensure equipment meets OSHA and facility safety standards.

     

  • Execute PM tasks according to the CMMS schedule and document all work performed.

     

  • Recommend improvements to PM frequency, spare parts, and system reliability.

     

  • Assist in utility system upgrades, installations, and commissioning.

     

  • Follow all OSHA, PSM (if ammonia refrigeration applies), and facility safety procedures.

     

  • Participate in lockout/tagout, confined space entry, hot work, and hazard-analysis activities.

     

  • Identify and correct unsafe conditions in utility areas.

     

  • Travel between assigned plants to support utility operations, special projects, and emergency response.

     

  • Provide training and technical guidance to on-site maintenance teams.

     

  • Maintain consistent communication with plant leadership across locations.

 


Qualifications

Qualification Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in utilities, industrial maintenance, or mechanical systems.

  • Working knowledge of boilers, wastewater treatment, refrigeration/engine room, or compressed air systems.

  • Ability to read technical diagrams and use diagnostic tools.

  • Experience with CMMS systems and maintenance documentation.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between facilities.

  • Wastewater Operator certification preferred.

  • Boiler Operator license preferred.

  • Ammonia refrigeration experience/certification preferred.

  • Forklift maintenance experience.

  • Food manufacturing experience.


Working Conditions/Environment

Working Conditions/Environment:

Works in a manufacturing environment where the employee is regularly required to speak, read, sit, stand, walk, lift, reach, grasp and bend while moving about the facility. Must be able to move 75 pounds a distance of 25 feet or more. Must be able to stand for an 8-hour shift (sometimes longer) with occasional breaks. May be required to work overtime, weekends and/or holidays as needed. May need to work in small, confined spaces at times that are not permit required. The employee is regularly exposed to heat, fumes, odors, dust, oil, slippery floors, moving parts/equipment and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the plant is loud. Earplugs and hairnets are required in the plant in accordance with company GMP and safety standards.
