Reports To: School Administrator
Term of Employment: 10 Month Term, 2026-2027 School Year Only
Benefit Type: Non Benefited - Temporary/Part Time, 5.5 hours daily - Grant funded position

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience working with multilingual learners and culturally diverse student populations.
  • Knowledge of language acquisition theory, instructional strategies for English learners, and state/federal requirements related to multilingual learner services.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze student data and develop targeted instructional support.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills.
  • Commitment to Sussex Academy's mission, vision, and core values.

Preferred

  • Bilingual (Spanish)
  • Previous experience providing direct English language development instruction.
  • Experience supporting classroom teachers through coaching, consultation, and co-planning.
  • Familiarity with WIDA standards, ACCESS assessments, and Delaware MLL compliance requirements.
  • Experience working within MTSS frameworks and data-driven instructional systems

Position Overview

Sussex Academy is seeking a dynamic and student-centered individual to serve as a part-time Multilingual Learner (MLL) Support Staff member for the 2026-2027 school year. This grant-funded position plays an important role in ensuring that multilingual learners have equitable access to rigorous academic opportunities while developing the language skills necessary to thrive in a K-12 learning environment.

The MLL Support Staff member will work collaboratively with teachers, interventionists, counselors, and administrators to provide targeted support for multilingual learners. Through instructional assistance, progress monitoring, family engagement, and program support, this individual will help students develop the confidence, language proficiency, and academic skills needed to explore, experience, and excel.

As part of Sussex Academy's commitment to becoming the premier K-12 school system in Delaware, the successful candidate will contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and student-centered decision making while supporting compliance with state and federal multilingual learner requirements.

Primary Responsibilities

Student Support and Language Development

  • Provide direct support to multilingual learners through individual, small-group, and classroom-based services.
  • Assist students in developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills necessary for academic success.
  • Support implementation of instructional strategies and accommodations that increase access to grade-level curriculum.
  • Monitor student progress and communicate observations to classroom teachers and school leaders.

Collaboration and Professional Learning

  • Collaborate with teachers, interventionists, counselors, and administrators to support multilingual learners.
  • Share resources and strategies that support language development across content areas.
  • Assist in coordinating services with special education and other student support personnel.

Family and Community Engagement

  • Build positive relationships with multilingual learners and their families.
  • Support communication between school and home to increase family engagement and understanding of available resources.
  • Assist with translation and interpretation efforts when appropriate and available.
  • Share information regarding student progress, language development, and school opportunities.

Program Support and Compliance

  • Assist with identification, monitoring, documentation, and recordkeeping requirements for multilingual learners.
  • Support administration of language proficiency assessments, including ACCESS for ELLs and related assessments.
  • Maintain accurate records and assist with state reporting requirements.
  • Support implementation of schoolwide practices that promote equitable access and inclusive learning environments.
