
Laboratory Operations Supervisor - Phlebotomy - Salary (68493)
Job Description
In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Laboratory Operations Supervisor is responsible for providing 100% customer satisfaction and 100% quality by acting as a coach, facilitator, and/or mediator for techs working the bench by evaluating and reviewing all work in the lab section; maintaining quality control within the section to include evaluating equipment, procedures and section staff; and performing tests and operating instruments. Exhibits the Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.
Job Functions:
- Performs the duties of a supervisor.
- Performs specimen testing (manual and automated) and operates various laboratory instruments.
- Obtains blood samples for analysis in the hospital and at off-site locations.
- Direct and train students and new lab employees in procedures and operation of instruments.
- Eliminates waste and manages flow within the department.
- Manages procedures in our electronic document control system in compliance with all accreditation agencies.
- Assumes duties of the Lab Manager in his/her absence.
- Has the authority and responsibility to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, discipline, direct, or recommend such actions by using independent judgment.
- Completes and conducts employee performance evaluations based on direct observation of their employee’s job performance.
- Granted authority to perform the supervisory duties and are held accountable for performing such duties.
- Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.
Minimum Education/Experience Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or relevant science field required.
- In lieu of bachelor’s degree, an associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology and willing to pursue a bachelor’s degree with completion within 3 years of hire will be considered.
- ASCP certified or other national certification required.
- One-year supervisory experience preferred.
- When working at a West Virginia site, ASCP and/or National Board of Certification and a WV Medical Technologist and/or MLT license required.
Phlebotomy Department Specific Minimum Education/Experience Required:
- Associate’s degree in a related field required.
- In lieu of associate’s degree, a high school diploma or GED and willing to pursue an associate’s degree with completion within 3 years of hire will be considered.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of one year of phlebotomy experience required.
- MLT ASCP certification or phlebotomy certification preferred.
- One-year supervisory experience preferred.

- Excellent verbal/written skills
- Ability to work as a team
- Organization and time management skills are also essential
Compensation Details: Education, experience, and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
