Skilled Laborer – Service Lateral Reconnection (Underground Utilities)
Position Summary
The Skilled Laborer – Service Lateral Reconnection is responsible for assisting pipe bursting and sewer rehabilitation crews with locating, exposing, and reconnecting service laterals to newly installed sewer mains. This position performs excavation, pipe installation, and general construction tasks to ensure service connections are properly restored and meet project specifications.
This role works under the direction of the Crew Supervisor or Superintendent and supports trenchless sewer replacement operations.
Key Responsibilities
Service Lateral Reconnections
- Locate and expose existing sewer service laterals.
- Excavate safely to expose lateral connections.
- Cut and reconnect laterals to the newly installed main line.
- Install saddles, wyes, or connection fittings as required.
- Ensure reconnections are installed according to project specifications.
Excavation & Utility Work
- Perform hand digging and excavation around utilities.
- Assist with locating underground utilities.
- Assist equipment operators during excavation of service areas.
- Install pipe, fittings, and connection hardware.
Pipe Installation Support
- Assist with installation of replacement pipe.
- Help stage pipe, fittings, and materials.
- Assist with HDPE pipe installation and connections when required.
Jobsite Support
- Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment.
- Maintain clean and organized job sites.
- Assist with traffic control and site safety.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
- Maintain safe work practices around excavations and equipment.
- Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
Required Skills
- Experience working in underground utility construction
- Ability to identify and work around sewer service laterals
- Knowledge of pipe fittings and connections
- Ability to safely perform hand excavation and trench work
Experience Requirements
- 2+ years underground utility or construction experience
- Experience with sewer service reconnections preferred
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to perform manual labor including digging, lifting, and working in excavations
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalency.
