Position Purpose:

The Prototype Technician – CNC Machining is responsible for developing, machining, and refining prototype components to support product development and engineering validation. This role bridges design engineering and manufacturing by translating CAD models into functional prototypes using CNC machining and related processes. The ideal candidate is hands‑on, detail‑oriented, and thrives in fast‑paced, low‑volume, high‑precision environments.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and machine prototype parts using CNC mills, lathes, and multi‑axis equipment
  • Interpret CAD models, engineering drawings, and specifications to plan machining strategies
  • Program CNC machines using CAM software (Mastercam)
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixturing, materials, and cutting parameters
  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC equipment
  • Perform first‑article inspections and dimensional verification using precision measuring tools
  • Collaborate closely with design, manufacturing, and quality engineers to optimize part designs
  • Modify designs and machining processes based on prototype test results and feedback
  • Document processes, tooling, programs, and lessons learned for future production transfer
  • Support rapid iteration and short‑run builds with a focus on speed, accuracy, and quality
  • Time management in fast‑turn environments
  • Continuous improvement mindset

Working Conditions

  • Prototype shop and manufacturing environment
  • May require standing, lifting, and operating machinery for extended periods
  • Occasional overtime during critical project builds

Education and Training:

  • Associate’s degree or technical certification in machining, manufacturing, or engineering (or equivalent experience)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of hands‑on CNC machining experience, preferably in a prototype or R&D setting
  • Proficiency in CNC setup, operation, and CAM programming
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, and blueprint reading
  • Ability to use precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMM, etc.)
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with 4‑axis or 5‑axis machining
  • Background in mechanical engineering or product design
  • Experience with rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, manual machining, EDM)
  • Familiarity with product development or new product introduction (NPI) environments

Physical Demands:

  • Reporting to work for assigned shift, maintaining a physical presence and performing assigned work for the duration of assigned shift is required;

Pay & Benefits

Rate: In accordance with applicable pay transparency laws, the salary range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00 per hour. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, education, qualifications, and other job-related criteria. This pay range is provided to ensure transparency and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
