
Associate Director of Competitive Swim
Job Description
Program Leadership & Operations
- Support the supervision, direction, and implementation of competitive swim programming at all YMCA branches.
- Ensure compliance with YMCA policies and procedures across aquatics operations.
- Promote, grow, and retain YMCA membership through high-quality programming and customer service.
- Provide leadership in branch fundraising efforts, including Annual and Capital Campaigns.
- Serve as a contributing member of the YMCA leadership team.
- Support YMCA staff in delivering excellent member and guest experiences, particularly within aquatics and swim team.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Competitive Swim.
Swim Program Supervision
- Assist in providing vision, leadership, and direction to competitive swim programs consistent with YMCA philosophy.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop full-time and part-time swim coaches across sites as assigned.
- Maintain open, effective communication with YMCA leadership, Aquatic Directors, coaches, and staff.
Direct Coaching Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and conduct swim practices in alignment with program goals, guidelines, and policies.
- Swim meet attendance as assigned.
- Prepare and submit swimmer entries via Team Unify for meet director review.
- Maintain swimmer attendance records, practice logs, and skill evaluations.
- Make informed decisions regarding training group placements or adjustments.
- Assist with organizing extracurricular team activities or special events.
Secondary Coaching Responsibilities
- Serve in a deck assistant role for additional training groups as assigned.
- Substitute coach for other training groups as needed.
- Coach seasonal competitive swim programs when assigned.
Parent Communication and Education
- Collaborate with coaching staff to coordinate parent education initiatives.
- Facilitate communication with parents regarding concerns, feedback, or complaints.
- Maintain availability before practices and during designated office hours.
- Respond promptly and professionally to all swim team-related communications.
- Participate in parents meetings at the start of each swim season.
- Conduct Parent/Coach conferences as needed.
Supervisory and Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist in organizing and coordinating team travel and scheduling.
- Support swimmer recruitment and retention, including outreach to area summer league programs in both Spartanburg and Greenville.
- Maintain strong working relationships with site Aquatic Directors.
- Maintain assigned office hours.
- Enter and maintain swimmer registration data in YMCA membership system.
- Perform regular and rotating administrative duties as assigned.
- Work with gathering and publishing articles and news for the weekly group/team emails.
Other Responsibilities
- Attend at least one coaching clinic or educational seminar annually.
- Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating YMCA core values and a strong work ethic.
- Comply with YMCA of the USA, ASCA, and USA Swimming Code of Ethics.
- Contribute professionally to the sport at the local or national level when appropriate.
- Maintain all required coaching certifications and credentials.
- Participate in swimmer recruitment and retention efforts when assigned
- Act as a primary responder in case of injury, accident, or illness in the pool area and provides backup to lifeguard as needed in emergencies and crowd control.
Qualifications:
- Education or personal experience relevant to competitive swimming.
- Competitive swim coaching experience required.
- Required or able to obtain within 30 days of hire:
- Safety Training for Swim Coaches and/or Lifeguard Certification
- CPR/AED, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, Bloodborne Pathogens
- Foundations of Coaching 101
- Principles of YMCA Competitive Swimming
- Demonstrated maturity, professionalism, and sound judgment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Commitment to the mission and values of the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg.
- Physical Requirements of the job include: Walking, carrying, sitting, seeing, hearing, crouching, lifting (up to 25 pounds), pushing, kneeling, standing, and speaking in a fast-paced aquatic environment.
