Job Description:
Accountabilities:
Operations
Assist in executing store operations.
Direct all operations of the store to meet sales targets and control expenses while managing customer service standards.
Supervise and as necessary participate in sorting and tagging merchandise, unloading donations, stocking shelves and performing cash transactions.
Plan store layout to attract customers, including window displays and merchandise displays, decides on in-store promotions and auctions; ensure attractiveness of the store through ''Tidy Maintenance".
Maintain a high level of customer service and create an attractive environment for customers.
Determine and maintain appropriate stock levels based on spot checks of the store and reviewing weekly sales records.
Responsible for supervising a team of employees and volunteers to ensure standards in sales, customer service, merchandizing, marketing, and public relations are achieved.
Address customer concerns, suggestions and complaints as needed.
Ensure accuracy in the completion of all customer transactions.
Implement inventory controls: retrieve, sort, appropriately price and discard or recycle any stale or un-saleable items on an ongoing basis; seek to protect the store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring.
Prepare sales summaries when required; contribute to meeting store budgets by maintaining customer service standards.
Oversee and participate in ensuring the maintenance and cleanliness of the store is up to standard policy including practicing “Tidy Maintenance.”
Team Management
Provide significant input into human relations decisions related to the Thrift Store, including hiring, orientating, training, evaluating, recognizing, disciplining, terminating, and performance managing in consultation with the Corps Officers and Human Relations and in compliance with Divisional and Territorial standards.
Responsible for regular supervision meetings with those supervised; and provides direction regarding tasks and/or may consult in assignments; completes regular performance evaluations (including probationary period) and appraisals with direct reports and dialogue with employees bi-annually for goal setting (PEAC) and evaluation.
In conjunction with Corps Officers, complete payroll supervisory functions in Workday.
Conduct appropriate ongoing staff and volunteer training for all aspects of merchandise handling including.
Provide ongoing, consistent coaching, performance feedback, and manage the evaluation (including probationary evaluations) of all thrift store employees ensuring that they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.
Ensure that all employees maintain any mandatory training or certification; identify training needs.
Prepare, post, and maintain work schedules for those supervised.
Complete payroll supervisory functions in UltiPro inclusive of approving vacation, sick time, etc. for staff; respond to inquiries from staff regarding payroll matters. Enter hours in UltiPro for approval by the Corps Officer. Interview prospective students and volunteers, orientate, train, and supervise as required.
Coordinate the posting of available positions; participate in the selection, and orientation process for new staff, including initiating of the appropriate documentation process.
Communications
Communicate any maintenance issues in a timely manner.
Conducts regular staff meetings and participates in regular ministry unit leadership and management meetings and provide up-to-date reports on store business activities, etc.
Communicate regularly with the Corps Officer to ensure consistent adherence to Ministry Unit Store Policies/Promotions and for support as needed.
May submit requests regarding in-store operational needs and supplies, as necessary.
Business and Administration
Manage in-store budget within guidelines; execute budget objectives by attaining sales margins, maintaining staff cost ratios; profit objectives as established by the region; ensure that banking is completed nightly or as per store policy into the appropriate financial institution.
Complete all financial/operational paperwork and submit same to Corps Officer in a timely manner, and in accordance with organization standards.
Analyze store financial statements; strategizes appropriate action to attain financial goals, monitor cost of goods and store supplies.
Ensure that policies and procedures are adhered to regarding cash handling etc.
Determine and submit requests regarding in-store operational needs and supplies as necessary.
Complete all operational paperwork and submit same to Ministry Unit office in a timely manner, and in accordance with organization standards.
Health & Safety
Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
May provide advice, make recommendations and improvements, and assist with the development of company policies/guidelines/handbooks as it relates to health and safety.
Ensure that the equipment, materials and protective devices as prescribed (OH&SA) are provided and maintained in good condition.
Ensure that all staff are aware of emergency procedures and are prepared to implement them immediately as necessary.
Ensure that proper procedures are followed in the event of a workplace injury or illness, conducting incident investigations when required.
Perform workplace inspections as required.
Responsible to maintain a level of competency and understand Sections 25 and 26 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
Administer and monitor WSIB E-Claim filing.
Participate in the supervision of Early and Safe Return to Work plans where applicable.
Maintain upkeep of Safety procedures as required.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
This is a permanent, full-time position based upon 35 hours per week.
Shifts will include Saturdays and the occasional weekday, as per operational requirement.
The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.
Flexibility in scheduling is required.
Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching is required.
Ability to lift/move up to 40 pounds on a regular basis.
Normal Hours of Work: as per operational requirements, generally regular business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break as necessary.
This position is considered a management position for the purposes of the Employment Standards Act of Ontario and as such is not covered by various ESA rules, including but not limited to those related to hours of work, daily and weekly rest periods, and overtime compensation. Salary is based on average minimum weekly hours of 35 per week and hours worked are compensated through the salary amount.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
Completion of a College Diploma in Business/Retail Management or equivalent.
Basic accounting experience is required.
Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
Minimum of three (3) years of prior related retail store management experience, specifically in secondhand merchandise preferred and supervisory experience.
Cash handling experience is required.
Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures i.e. bank deposits, summary reports, etc.
Must have strong skills and experience using word processing (WORD); spread sheet use (EXCEL); specific programs related to The Salvation Army.
Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle, and insurance; a current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
Good merchandising skills and a flair for conceiving and implementing creative merchandising themes.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $48,339.20 to $60,442.20 with a maximum of $72,527.00.Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
