Position
The Manual Machinist I is responsible for setting up and operating conventional machining equipment to manufacture, repair, and modify precision components used in industrial equipment and systems.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual machining equipment including lathes, mills, drill presses, grinders, and saws
- Manufacture, modify, and repair metal components to precise tolerances according to engineering drawings and specifications
- Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, sketches, and technical documents
- Select appropriate tooling, materials, speeds, and feeds for machining operations
- Perform precision measurements using micrometers, calipers, indicators, gauges, and other inspection equipment
- Conduct routine machine maintenance and maintain a clean and organized work environment
- Inspect finished parts to ensure compliance with quality standards and dimensional requirements
- Troubleshoot machining and equipment issues to minimize downtime and production delays
- Collaborate with engineering, fabrication, and production teams to support manufacturing operations
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations
- Maintain accurate production and quality documentation
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to machining processes, efficiency, and workplace safety
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of machinist experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment
- 1–3 years of hands-on manual machining experience operating conventional machine shop equipment
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training in machining preferred
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and specifications
- Proficient with precision measuring instruments and inspection techniques
- Knowledge of machining materials, tooling, cutting methods, and shop mathematics
- Ability to maintain tight tolerances and produce high-quality work with minimal supervision
- Understanding of OSHA safety standards and safe machine operation practices
- Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods during shifts
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Forklift or overhead crane operation experience
- Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement experience
