Sr. Donor Specialist (San Antonio, TX)

KBR is seeking an ON-SITE Senior Donor Specialist in San Antonio, TX to support our SPARC Program for KBR’s Science and Space division with direct work experience in facilitating brain tissue donation for research. The SPARC program (Service Personnel Advancing Research on CTE) seeks to: 1) Provide education to service members, veterans, families, and organizations that have the ability to directly impact brain tissue donation; 2) Support team to facilitate donor consent, recovery of whole specimens, and shipment of specimens using appropriate methods

Under the direction of the Regional Operations Coordinator:

The preponderance of duties and the preponderance of work time of the Senior Donor Specialist will be focused on:

Approaching and educating military members, veterans, organizations, funeral homes, post-mortem tissue donation programs and/or organizations, and other key community stakeholders about the need for brain tissue donations in the DoD/ University of California San Francisco/ Institute of Neuro Degenerative Disease (IND). Some of these medically competent military members and veterans will be near death, such as patients in healthcare facilities, Medical Examiners, Funeral Home, and hospice programs.

Establishing and maintaining relationships with organizations that have touchpoints with potential donors.

Educating families of potential tissue donors about brain donation at the time of death of their military or veteran family member. Primary trainer for programmatic donation documentation and effective consent process.

Serving as the primary point of contact to be notified about potential donors and answering questions from families, healthcare workers, funeral home workers, or individuals who would like to know more about the donation program.

Screening donors, registering study participants, and coordinating with local coroners, medical examiners, tissue transport providers, to facilitate brain donation for research.

Under the supervision of the Regional Operations Coordinator, has primary responsibility for all donation training, activities, shipments, and documentation supporting recoveries within region. Collaborating with Community Education Coordinators and Marketing Specialists on recruitment activities.

Performing this work under general supervision where discretion is required, such as in businesses, the homes of military members, veterans, and their family members; in the rooms of patients in healthcare facilities; and in funeral homes.

Coordinates strategy among SPARC donor team to reach program goals.

Responsible for overseeing and train Donor Specialist in recovery and consent as needed.
 

On an as needed basis, ancillary duties in supporting tissue recovery will also be performed. Such tissue recovery duties will generally be performed in mortuaries, funeral homes, medical examiner’s facilities, and healthcare facilities. The Senior Donor Specialist may perform such duties supporting donor specialists with no direct onsite supervision. Examples of duties will typically include verifying donor identity, reviewing next of kin consent and chain of custody documentation; completion of documents and records for each donation; and coordinating the transport of donors following tissue recovery.

The Senior Donor Specialist will be on-call on a rotating and regular basis and must be available to work nights, weekends, and Holidays with previously scheduled on-call shifts. Significant amount of driving is expected in this position with mileage reimbursement consistent with the US Government Joint Travel Regulations.

General Responsibilities

 

  • Protects the rights and welfare of all human research participants involved in research in accordance with federal regulations and sponsoring agency policies and procedures.
  • Assists with scientific and compliance reporting requirements in accordance with federal regulations and sponsoring agency policies and procedures.
  • Reports on the status of regulatory agreements/ actions, educational events, individuals in attendance at each event, methods of outreach, quality of interactions with the site’s contacts, number of interactions with decedent next of kin, number of pending or executed brain recoveries, brain specimens processed, brain specimens shipped, and data collection progress to funding agency.
     

Required Education/Experience

To qualify, candidates must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree plus at least four years of experience in the funeral industry, bereavement counseling, human subject research, tissue donation, professional clinical laboratory work, nursing, paramedic/military medic, or related similar experience, or an associate’s degree in a related field plus at least four years of job-related substantive experience in human subject research, tissue donation, professional clinical laboratory work, nursing, paramedic/military medic, or similar related experience. In lieu of a degree, 10 years of related experience may be considered.

Preferred Education/Experience
 

  • Prior experience working in military environments and interacting with service member personnel and their families.

Experience in the field of tissue or organ donation.
