About the Unit
Our Med Surg Unit is a 25-bed department providing comprehensive care to patients from Mason County and surrounding West Michigan communities.
This unit cares for a wide range of medical conditions, including:
Pneumonia and respiratory illnesses
Cellulitis and infectious processes
Kidney failure and acute/chronic kidney injury
Diabetes-related conditions and hyperglycemia
Ulcers and wound care needs
Geriatric and confused elderly patients
Alcohol-related health concerns
Sepsis
Select psychiatric patients

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, assist in the development of nursing care plans and perform a variety of both technical
and routine nursing services consistent with such plans.
Performs activities under the direction of the RN, per job description and after skill validation.
• Applies the Core concepts of Patient and Family Centered Care in practice and uses this knowledge to personalize care for
each patient/family.
• Performs routine bedside nursing activities including: bathing and personal grooming of patients; ambulating, moving and
turning patients; assisting patients with bedpans or urinary devices; making patient beds and caring for personal property.
• Takes vital signs and records intake and output.
• Applies and changes sterile and non-sterile dressing using appropriate technique.
• Provides care to the patient according to the plan of care, unit routine and hospital policy under the direction of a Registered
nurse. Documents in electronic medical record.
• Keeps professional nursing staff advised of current patient status as well as changes in patient condition as
