There is 1 position that will be filled at the Senior or Staff Engineer or Engineering Technical Specialist III level, commensurate with the successful candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and education.
Dominion Energy Virginia’s Electric Transmission-Substation Engineering department is seeking motivated, engaged senior to technical expert engineer to fill a vacancy within the Protection and Control (P&C) Design team.
Substation Engineering - Protection and Control (P&C) Design is the organization responsible for the creation and maintenance of substation electrical and control drawings. Performing detailed design of the high voltage electric grid system operated from 11kV to 500kV.
Primary Responsibilities: Lead and support the engineering, design, and implementation of protection and control systems for transmission and distribution substations. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and a commitment to safety, quality, and design excellence.
- Develop protection and control design engineering packages for Dominion’s Electric Transmission and Electric Distribution Substations. Create and modify protection and control design documents and drawings for substation projects including relay functional drawings, logic diagrams, elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams, communications diagrams, relay panel arrangement drawings, and bills of material.
- Coordinate with and provide technical assistance to Physical Substation Engineers, Protective Relay Settings Engineers, Communications Engineers, Transmission Line Engineers, Material Coordinators, Panel Wiring Shop, and Field Technicians to fully develop the protection and control design package.
- Assist project management teams and conceptual engineering teams for the development of the scope of work and design requirements for substation engineering projects.
Independently develop system protection design package for complex projects using applicable standards.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry include the following:
Staff Engineer: 8+ years of experience in Substation Physical Engineering, Substation P&C Engineering, or demonstrated equivalent.
Senior Engineer: 5+ years of experience in Substation Physical Engineering, Substation P&C Engineering, or demonstrated equivalent.
Engineering Technical Specialist III: 5+ years of relevant work experience in a technical role with a preferred Bachelor’s Degree (Or 7 years of relevant work experience in a technical role with an Associate Degree)
- Experience with Electric Utility required.
- Thorough understanding of the principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major substation components.
- Experience with electromechanical and microprocessor-based protection and control systems
- Ability to read, interpret, and verify accuracy of one-line diagrams, relay functional drawings, elementary, logic and wiring diagrams
- Experience with MicroStation and / or AutoCAD
- Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives

Required degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree): Bachelor degree

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following educational criteria must be met:
- Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
- Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license
In order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:
- 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
- 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline; or
- 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree
