Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in histologic preparations. Troubleshoots minor equipment failures, prepares reagents, solutions, and control slides. Performs Special Staining procedures. Prepares reports and ensures that quality control criteria are approved by the pathologist. May provide training and modification of SOP’s.
What you will do:
Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures.
Ensures proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples and processes paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.
Ensures proper tissue processing.
Embed processed tissue in paraffin; performs microtomy of embedded tissue.
Prepares slides for routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining and performs cover slipping of stained slides either manually or automated. May obtain and prepare control material used in IHC procedures for validation.
Performs filing of finished blocks and slides.
Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and troubleshoot minor equipment failures. Documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests.
Adheres to laboratory’s quality control policies and document all quality control activities. Ensures all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met. Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.
Position Hours:
40 hours, Day Shifts, 6a-2:30p
Minimum Requirements:
Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program OR At least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry(must include credit hours in both), AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology (clinical, veterinary, industry or research) laboratory in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory* within the last ten years.
One (1) year of experience as a Histotechnician preferred. Must have experience in the following areas: Fixation, Microtomy, and Processing.
HT ASCP required or be eligible to take and successfully pass the exam within one (1) year of employment.
