Day & Night Shift
General Summary
A worker who welds together heavy structural metal components as specified by blueprints, work orders, or oral instructions under direct supervision.
Duties
• Perform welding tasks under the direction of the immediate supervisor.
• Identify and follow the appropriate weld procedure for assigned tasks.
• Provide quality welds that meet specifications and QC approval requirements.
• Complete assigned job duties as required by supervision.
• Confirm temporary bracing is installed to prevent distortion and remove when complete.
• Operate punches, grinders, drills, saws, oxy-fuel torches, plasma cutters, and hand tools.
• Move and organize materials to support production tasks.
• Maintain a clean and orderly workstation.
Work Experience
Desired Education, Knowledge, and/or Skills
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of basic shop mathematics.
• Experience in heavy structural fabrication.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints, shop drawings, and welding symbols.
• Proficient in effective operation of welding equipment.
• 1–2 years welding experience with FCAW (flux core arc welding).
• Must pass welding test as part of the application process.
Safety Requirements
• Adhere to all Southland Steel Fabricators safety rules, policies, and procedures.
• Maintain orderly and clean work areas.
• Attend all required safety meetings.
• Inspect welding equipment daily with attention to welding leads.
• Inspect tools daily before use, including extension cords.
• Use hand and power tools safely with proper guards in place.
• Wear personal protective equipment appropriate for assigned tasks.
• Required PPE:
• Welder helmet with appropriately shaded filter lens and safety glasses.
• Fire/flame resistant clothing.
• Heavy flame-resistant gloves.
• Respirators when ventilation is inadequate or harmful metals are present.
• Steel/hard toe boots.
• Hearing protection.
• Cutting Steel with Torch:
• Wear shaded safety glasses with face shield or cutting goggles.
• Use approved friction lighters or approved devices to light the torch.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to occasionally pull, push, carry, or lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to withstand occasional bending, squatting, or crouching.
• Ability to frequently handle tools, equipment, or materials.
• Ability to work in inclement weather conditions including cold, heat, and humidity.
