Job Description
Job Description:
Supervises the Standard Dynamic hardware/mechanical engineering team in the design, development, and continuous improvement of mechanical and electromechanical products and solutions. Drives a culture of process excellence, design standardization, and disciplined engineering practices to meet customer specifications, quality targets, and market requirements.
Major Areas of Accountability:
1. Leads and manages the design and development of mechanical and electromechanical products, tooling, fixtures, and hardware systems within the Standard Dynamic product line. Assigns engineering staff to projects based on technical requirements and workload. Monitors hardware design from concept through production release to ensure designs meet specifications, dimensional tolerances, and established performance goals.
2. Provides regular updates to senior management on Standard Dynamic project status, hardware design decisions, variance justifications, and key technical milestones. Escalates design risks, resource constraints, or schedule deviations in a timely manner.
3. Collaborates with marketing, product management, and manufacturing engineering in the following:
- Partners in defining and developing appropriate Standard Dynamic hardware product configurations and mechanical solutions. Manages feasibility studies for new mechanical product concepts and technology insertions. Develops hardware-level concepts, material and manufacturing cost estimates, and engineering schedules to support new product introduction (NPI) and platform development.
- Through mechanical design standardization, design-for-manufacturability (DFM), tolerance stack-up analysis, and value engineering, continuously improves the cost, quality, and repeatability of the Standard Dynamic team’s hardware designs and engineering processes.
- Recommends capital expenditures to Sr. Engineering Manager to meet engineering objectives.
4. Owns process quality and continuous improvement (CI) initiatives for the Standard Dynamic engineering team. Applies lean engineering and structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g., root cause analysis, PFMEA, DFMEA) to identify and eliminate design defects, rework, and engineering waste.
- Identifies and implements process improvement initiatives—including updated design standards, CAD/PDM workflows, and engineering change management procedures—to improve engineering productivity, first-time quality, on-time delivery, and hardware cost reduction for Standard Dynamic products.
- Coordinates CI efforts with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and other engineering teams to ensure hardware improvements translate effectively from design to production. Participates in cross-functional design reviews and corrective action boards as appropriate.
5. Collaborates with Project Engineers and/or Project Engineering Managers to ensure hardware designs for Standard Dynamic customer orders are delivered on time, within budget, and to specification. Provides mechanical and systems-level technical support as needed to resolve design challenges or field issues.
7. Responsible for the ongoing management, mentorship, and professional development of assigned Standard Dynamic hardware engineers. Fosters a team culture of engineering excellence, process discipline, and continuous improvement. Conducts performance reviews, sets development goals, and supports individual growth aligned with team and business unit objectives.
Qualifications:
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering,
Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
Experience with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, CREO) and engineering change management processes preferred.
Physical Demands (US only):
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
