Job Description

Job Title: Character Education Teacher Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Reports to: Building Principal Pay Grade: Teacher Salary � 187 Days

Primary Purpose:

The Character Education Teacher is responsible for designing and delivering instruction that fosters students' social-emotional growth, ethical decision-making, and personal responsibility. Working within an alternative school environment, this role supports students who may face behavioral, academic, or social challenges by creating a structured, supportive, and engaging learning atmosphere focused on character development and life skills.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas Certificate in Teaching area and/or such other credentials as may be required by the State Board of Educator Certification for this position 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Skilled in working with students with demonstrated behavioral and anger issues
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

  • At least one year of student teaching or an approved internship preferred.
  • Experience working with at-risk youth or in alternative education settings preferred

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

The following additional job description information is to be considered and included along with the Teacher job description for the position for Character education Teacher. The Character education Teacher shall:

  1. Model campus adopted character values.
  2. Emotional intelligence and cultural responsiveness
  3. Classroom management and de-escalation techniques
  4. Adaptability and problem-solving
  5. Strong mentoring and coaching skills
  6. Commitment to student-centered and trauma-informed practices

Instructional Strategies:

  1. Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  2. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
  3. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  4. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect the understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  5. Conduct an assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  6. Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  7. Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.

Student Growth and Development:

  1. Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
  2. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  3. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
  4. Be a positive role model for students, and support the mission of the school district by visiting students assisting them with their transition back to their home campus.

Classroom Management and Organization:

  1. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  2. Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and the student handbook.
  3. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  4. Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

Communication:

  1. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  2. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and
  3. community members.
  4. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  5. Professional Growth and Development
  6. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  7. Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies
  8. for classroom teachers.
  9. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other
  10. documents required.
  11. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  12. Other duties as assigned

 

Working Conditions:

This position operates in an alternative school setting serving students with diverse academic, behavioral, and emotional needs. Flexibility, resilience, and a proactive approach are essential.

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals;standard instructional equipment; 

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours Other: Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures; Other duties as assigned
