
Substitute: School Secretary
Job Description
JOB GOAL: To provide coverage in the absence of building secretaries & assure the efficient and smooth operation of a school/department office, on an as-needed basis.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Attends to and reviews all correspondence.
- Formulates bulletins, newsletter, memoranda, directives, calendars, correspondence, and similar communication as required by the principal/administrator.
- Compiles data, coordinates information and prepares reports and documents as required.
- Establishes and maintains pertinent school records and student data bases.
- Acts as central point of contact for the school/department and as a liaison between the principal/administrator and their customers - staff, students, parents, and others outside the building.
- Assist principal/Administrator in establishing calendar of events, appointments, interviews, conferences, visitations, presentations, and staff agendas.
- May be responsible for staff absence reporting, collecting time sheets and other payroll information as requested.
- Prepares appropriate reports as needed.
- May work with the principal/administrator to effectively manage the closing and opening of school such as preparation of class lists, the principal's annual report, distribution of cumulative records and transcripts, notification of teacher assignments, kindergarten placements, packets for teachers and students, and processing of requisitions.
- May be responsible for signature sheets and/or distribution of documents for all staff members as required.
- Performs such other related tasks as the principal/administrator may assign.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Proficiency in typing (min. 50 wpm)
- Knowledge of office practices, procedures, equipment, management, and familiarity with the use of computerized data base management systems and word processing techniques
- Ability to work tactfully and courteously with school staff and the public
- Such additions and/or alternatives to the above as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual, (English and Spanish)
- Associates degree or higher
Previous secretarial experience, preference to New London Public Schools
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Substitute position on an as-needed basis; salary/hourly rate to be determined by the Board.
