Job Description
Location: Lombard, IL
Travel: Project-based / approximately 50%
Compensation: $35–40/hour + overtime
About the Company
Pro beam is a global leader in electron beam technology, delivering advanced welding and additive manufacturing solutions for demanding industrial and research applications for more than 50 years. Its systems are trusted in industries where precision and reliability matter most — including aerospace, defense, automotive, and energy.
The US subsidiary in Lombard, IL serves as a central hub for commissioning support, technical support, training, customer support, and expanding contract manufacturing operations across North America. The US team works closely with engineering, project management, manufacturing, and development teams based in Germany.
About the Role
As pro-beam continues to expand its installed base across North America, the company is strengthening its hands-on technical support and commissioning support capabilities within the US organization.
This role is ideal for technically curious and hands-on candidates with experience in industrial equipment, field service, automation support, electromechanical troubleshooting, or machinery environments who are looking to continue growing within advanced industrial manufacturing and commissioning environments.
The position focuses on startup support, troubleshooting, commissioning support activities, and customer-facing technical support for highly specialized welding and production equipment. The systems themselves are engineered and programmed by pro-beam’s teams in Germany, while the US-based team supports machine startup activities, troubleshooting, process support, and customer-site technical support in real production environments.
This is not a pure PLC programming role and not a reactive 24/7 emergency service position. Instead, the role offers a balanced mix of planned customer projects, technical troubleshooting, machine support, customer interaction, and long-term technical development within a highly specialized industrial technology environment.
New hires work closely alongside experienced engineers and technical teams during onboarding and customer deployments, allowing them to gradually build experience in commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer-site support activities over time.
Key Responsibilities
- Support machine startup and commissioning support activities internally and at customer sites
- Assist with troubleshooting electrical, automation, and machine-related issues during startup and service activities
- Support PLC and HMI-related adjustments as needed (Siemens / TIA Portal experience preferred; other platforms considered)
- Support machine optimization and troubleshooting efforts in customer production environments
- Support customer training for operators, maintenance personnel, and technical users
- Serve as a technical interface between customers, engineering, manufacturing, and service teams
- Support technical documentation and reporting activities
- Contribute to continuous improvement and troubleshooting efforts throughout the machine lifecycle
What pro-beam is Looking For
- Technical degree, certification, military technical training, or equivalent hands-on experience in Automation, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field
- Hands-on experience in industrial equipment, field service, electromechanical troubleshooting, automation support, machine assembly, industrial maintenance, or related environments
- Basic to intermediate PLC familiarity required; Siemens / TIA Portal experience is a plus
- Basic familiarity with HMI systems and industrial automation environments
- Strong troubleshooting mindset and interest in industrial machinery and machine startup activities
- Mechanical aptitude and willingness to work hands-on with complex industrial equipment
- Willingness to travel for customer projects and support assignments
- Customer-oriented, proactive, and comfortable working within interdisciplinary teams
- Interest in continuing to grow technically within advanced industrial manufacturing and commissioning environments
Why Join pro-beam
- Work with highly specialized electron beam manufacturing and welding systems used in aerospace, defense, energy, and other advanced industrial applications
- Gain hands-on exposure to advanced industrial machinery, commissioning support, troubleshooting, and customer-site technical support activities
- Join a collaborative environment with close interaction between US operations and German engineering teams
- Receive structured onboarding, mentoring, and long-term technical development opportunities within a highly specialized technology environment
