Job Description

Who We Are:

The Springfield City School District, home to The John Legend Theatre, is seeking a Alternative Placement Program (Online) Teacher at the Dome for the 2026-2027 school year.   We are a nationally ranked Division I District serving approximately 7,500 Pre-K through grade 12 students, in a vibrant learning community of 17 state of the art buildings in west-central Ohio.  The Springfield City School District values the racial, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity of our student body, faculty and staff.  Our academic and extracurricular aim is to ensure social and emotional learning growth for students with a wealth of opportunity, including a 1:1 initiative and the YouMedia Center, which is a digital learning lab offering students activities such as 3-D printing, graphic design, and videography.  We are Wildcats! 

The APP is a structured and safe learning environment for middle and high school students in need of social, emotional, life skill, and behavioral interventions. The APP allows students to continue their academic instruction while they are assisted in examining the behaviors that resulted in their placement. As a requirement of the APP, students are expected to participate in counseling activities that will help them examine the underlying causes for and modify negative behaviors, and develop socially appropriate behaviors. 

Student Environment:
The APP's goal is to provide a trauma-informed, restorative, and therapeutic environment allowing the student to successfully acquire the skills needed to return to the regular school setting. Restorative Practices will be used to build necessary skills in the areas of social awareness, communication, and conflict resolution. Due to the therapeutic components to the program, the teacher-to-student ratio (1:12). Each student's program involves the following areas of focus: academic, vocational, behavioral and life skills, driven by the individual's specific needs. 

Coursework:
Students will be enrolled in online academic courses comparable to their current schedule with a focus on core subjects. Participation in online grade-level coursework will be monitored and supported by a Springfield City School District teacher.  The teacher of this position may also assist with the Springfield Online position. 

As a Teacher you are required to:

  • Current 7-12  licensure issued by the Ohio Department of Education
  • Be flexible in your work schedule and be willing to attend/participate in professional development sessions
  • Be willing to serve on teams
  • Have the ability to relate to and teach students with diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm in your role

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous experience in an urban setting, not required

As a Teacher you will:

  • Developing lesson plans and instructional materials and providing individualized and small group instruction to meet the needs of each student.
  • Managing an organized and professional classroom that is conducive to learning and the development of the whole child.
  • Fostering a cooperative and respectful partnership with families and encouraging parent involvement through classroom observations and volunteer opportunities.
  • Maintaining close relationships with parents, communicating on a regular basis, specifically in regards to at-risk students.
  • Actively engaging at-risk students in the learning process; planning and using appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students.
  • Recognizing the needs of individual students and the entire group and offering support and flexibility as needed.
  • Working as part of a cooperative and diverse team of educators and administrators to carry out the goals of our District.
  • Utilizing technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
  • Participating in professional development activities that are aligned with district and building goals, assigned subject content and the varied needs of students.

What We Offer:

As a contracted employee, Teacher work 183 days per year and 7.25 hours per day.

Starting salary is in accordance with the negotiated agreement, increases with experience and education.

The Springfield Education Association and the Board of Education are currently working on a new professional agreement.  While that is in the works, please refer to the current agreement as to pay and benefits that are in place for the 2025-26 school year.
