What you’ll do:
Eaton’s Mission Systems Division is currently seeking a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer. This position is based at our Orchard Park, NY facility and is responsible for supporting research and new product development in Eaton’s Mission Systems Division (MSD). The engineer performs tasks including design, analysis, risk management, planning, and coordination with other technical functions and program management related to all work within the scope of assigned projects. The engineer will use their technical knowledge to lead multiple large-scale projects while working with global teams and across functions. They will take accountability for project performance and will lead the team to meet the needs of internal and external customers.
Job Responsibilities
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to project teams made up of multiple engineering disciplines.
• Coordinate and execute product design activities in accordance with project cost and schedule constraints and understand the business impact of different programmatic solutions and design choices.
• Draw on a defined technology or product area of expertise to be called upon as consultant within the site engineering organization.
• Completes conceptual/clean sheet designs for less complex technical domains.
• Manage technical risk through exhaustive identification, prioritization of risk mitigation activities, and data driven design changes where appropriate.
• Technical interface with the external customer including ability to determine customer wants and needs and translate them into verifiable engineering requirements.
• Present technical information, tactical objectives, project risk etc. to Eaton leadership.
• Develop engineering standards and design guides to support continuous improvement of the relevant engineering domain.
• Work to Design for Six Sigma principles including careful management of Critical to Quality requirements through the design lifecycle, rigorous knowledge building of the design space, understanding of the effects of manufacturing variation, and design for manufacturing and assembly to meet product recurring cost targets.
• Review project related documentation such as analysis or test results created by peers to ensure their completeness and quality.
• Work directly with internal and external customers, suppliers, project engineers, design engineers, test engineers, sustainment engineers, Centers of Excellence, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, program management, and other functions to develop systems and products.
• Coach junior to mid-level engineers within the incumbents specified domain.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of 5 years of system, product design, development, and/or production design problem resolution experience.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience designing mechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic systems.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now or in the future.
• This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. ‘Green Card Holder’), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution.
• Experience working in the Aerospace industry.
• Design for Six Sigma Greenbelt or Blackbelt.
