Job Description
Position: Harmony Community Garden Assistant
Work Schedule: May - October, 1-2 hours per week, with flexible schedule based on garden needs
Start Date: 5/18/26
Pay: $16.45 per hour
Summary:
The Harmony Community Garden Assistant plays an important role in supporting the care, upkeep, and community spirit of the garden. This position helps maintain a welcoming and inclusive space while contributing to light gardening tasks and occasional community engagement. It is a great opportunity for someone interested in sustainability, food access, and connecting with others through shared outdoor work.
Required Qualifications:
1. Interest in gardening, sustainability, or community-based work
2. Ability to work independently. Willingness to perform light physical tasks outdoors, including bending, lifting, and working in varying weather
3. Strong communication skills and a positive, team-oriented attitude
4. Comfort interacting with a diverse group of community members
5. Dependable and willing to take initiative
6. Basic gardening knowledge is helpful but not required, and a willingness to learn is encouraged
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Assist with early-season setup, including marking and preparing garden plots
2. Support routine garden maintenance such as watering, weeding, planting, and harvesting
3. Help with basic garden operations including soil preparation, composting, and seasonal upkeep
4. Maintain cleanliness and organization of tools, storage areas, and shared spaces
5. Engage with garden participants in a friendly and respectful way, helping create a welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds
6. Collaborate with staff or volunteers to support occasional garden activities or small events
7. Observe garden conditions and communicate any concerns, needs, or repair issues to Adult Programs Coordinator
Work Environment:
This role takes place outdoors at the Harmony Community Garden at Harmony Learning Center in Maplewood. Tasks are performed in a shared community space and may involve working in a variety of weather conditions. The position is designed to be flexible and manageable within a short weekly time commitment, making it a good fit for individuals looking to contribute in a meaningful but limited way.
