POSITION: School Security Officer
Part Time Hourly as Needed - Less Than 20 Hours Per Week
START DATE: Immediately - Pending Criminal History Clearance
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma (or equivalency)
- Completion of college-level courses in the area of security, psychology, emergency management or criminal justice preferred
- Experience in law enforcement or experience and training in a school security-related field preferred.
- Possess knowledge of and ability to apply standard security procedures and best practices.
- Possess the ability to acquire knowledge of School Board policies and procedures.
- Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4
- Required criminal history background check
- Other qualifications the Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Security may find appropriate.
REPORTS TO:
Director of Security and Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Security
FUNCTION:
- Under the supervision of the ESCNJ Assistant Superintendent for Operations and Security and/or designee, the Security Officer assists school administrators in prevention of personal injury, property loss and disruption of the educational process through daily operations including routine patrol, crime prevention, surveillance, investigation, emergency response, recovery of property and related activities to ensure a safe, secure and orderly school environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. The main responsibilities of this position include enforcing all school policies, parking enforcement, interaction with students and providing assistance to students and staff when needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Patrols assigned buildings and grounds to prevent student disruptions, vandalism, illegal entry and other activities that detract from a safe school environment;
- Maintains a high level of visibility as students arrive and depart from school and as they change classes during the school day;
- Enforce Commission policies and procedures regarding conduct of persons on school property;
- Confronts any unauthorized persons on school property, routes or detains them, or calls police for assistance as necessary;
- Maintains alertness to illegal substances or weapons being carried or stored on school property;
- Participates in random security checks;
- Prepares required written reports of incidents and disciplinary referrals as necessary;
- Offers testimony in court or before the Board of Directors as necessary;
- Collaborates with and assists public safety personnel (police, fire, EMS) who respond to calls.
- Participates in the conduct of fire drills, lockdown drills and other emergency building drills.
Performs additional duties as directed by Assistant Superintendent and Director of Security.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to stand at assigned station and patrol assigned building and grounds for long periods of time;
- Standing, twisting, turning, pushing, bending, crawling, crouching, stooping, and kneeling may be required while patrolling school grounds and responding to incidents;
- Ability to immediately respond to an emergency in any part of the location assigned or any other ESCNJ school location as needed.
- Function in stressful situations and exercise good judgment under potentially dangerous conditions;
- Knowledge of basic first aid, including CPR;
- Knowledge of standard security procedures and regulations and laws relating to school building and grounds, building intrusion and trespassing;
- Ability to read and understand laws, policies, rules and regulations and procedures and to follow written and oral directions
- Visually asses conditions in the school to observe student behavior and monitor for potential threats.
- Ability to speak in audible tones to students, faculty, staff and visitors as needed.
- Exposure to the ongoing hazards that are endemic to security work and public health safety.
- Exposure to dangerous situations and injury from trespassers, students or others with weapons;
- Working outdoors in all weather conditions and exposure to crossing areas which are not side-walked or paved, and may be poorly lit, while performing exterior checks on foot to patrol school grounds;
- May be required to work evenings and weekends as needed to provide security for meeting, student activities and special programs.
EVALUATION:
- Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Director of Security and/or Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Security in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of noncertified staff
HOURLY RATE: $25 - Less Than 20 Hours Per Week
