Food and Nutrition Helper - On Call Substitute
Job Description
Salary: Grade 10 - Part Time, On Call Substitute
Pay Range: $20.76 - $23.93
Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Food and Nutrition Manager or Director of Food and Nutrition Services, the Cafeteria Helper supports the preparation, service, and cleanup of nutritious and appealing meals for students and staff at Acton Public Schools and Acton-Boxborough Regional Schools. The role requires a strong commitment to food safety, sanitation, teamwork, and providing a positive experience for all customers.
Duties and Roles:
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with food preparation and portioning according to standardized recipes and instructions
- Set up serving stations and serve food in a courteous and efficient manner
- Clean kitchen equipment, utensils, serving lines, and work areas following established sanitation procedures
- Operate kitchen equipment safely and correctly (e.g., ovens, warmers, dish machines)
- Wash dishes, trays, pots, pans, and other food service items
- Unpack deliveries, stock shelves, and rotate inventory using the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method
- Assist with catering preparation and delivery as assigned
- Prepare the kitchen for both the opening and closing of the school year
- Maintain accurate and responsible cash handling, if applicable
- Report absences to the Cafeteria Manager/ Absence Management as early as possible
- Attend required training and meetings
- Exhibit professional behavior including patience, respect, and effective communication
- Follow all Food Service Department policies and procedures, including food safety, sanitation, and personnel standards
- Substitute at other schools within the district as directed by the Manager or Director
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Cafeteria Manager or Food Service Director
Working Conditions:
- Fast-paced kitchen environment
- Exposure to hot equipment, cleaning chemicals, and refrigerated storage
- Frequent lifting (up to 40 lbs), standing, bending, and reaching
Qualifications: High School graduate or equivalent.
- Must be in good physical health
- Must present a neat and clean appearance
- Ability to lift, reach, bend, and stand for extended periods
- Prior food service experience is preferred but not required
- Ability to follow directions and work cooperatively with others
