Position Purpose

The Visual Arts K�12 Specialist provides districtwide leadership, support, and expertise in the development, implementation, and evaluation of high-quality visual arts instruction. This role supports teachers, campuses, and district initiatives through instructional coaching, curriculum development, professional learning, and program coordination. The position is designed to increase student achievement through enhanced instructional delivery, aligned curriculum practices, and job-embedded professional learning.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Instructional Leadership & Coaching

  • Provide ongoing instructional coaching and school-based support to K�12 visual arts educators
  • Observe, support, and assist teachers with curriculum alignment, best practices, and student success
  • Model effective instructional strategies across 2D and 3D media
  • Identify instructional gaps and provide targeted feedback with actionable recommendations
  • Promote and support implementation of TEKS-aligned curriculum and assessments
  • Serve as a mentor by modeling high-quality instruction and facilitating professional growth

Curriculum Development & Resource Alignment

  • Write, revise, and implement the K�12 visual arts curriculum
  • Develop instructional resources, exemplars, rubrics, and assessments
  • Align curriculum materials within district platforms and support ongoing updates
  • Integrate current trends in visual arts pedagogy, technology, and practice
  • Support horizontal and vertical alignment across grade levels and campuses

Professional Learning & Program Support

  • Design, plan, and deliver high-quality professional development for visual arts educators
  • Engage consultants, artists, and content experts to provide specialized training
  • Support Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and collaborative planning structures
  • Assist in recruiting and supporting certified visual arts educators

Program Coordination & Event Management

  • Plan and coordinate districtwide visual arts events, exhibitions, competitions, and showcases, including:
    • VASE / Jr. VASE/TEAMS
    • District exhibitions and required shows
    • Local, state, and national art opportunities
  • Coordinate timelines, communication, logistics, and documentation for all events
  • Ensure student work reflects high-quality standards for exhibition and competition
  • Serve as liaison between the district and community arts organizations

School/Organization Improvement

  • Provide specialized support and/or assistance for Visual Artteachers in collaboration with campus leadership and Coordinator of Visual Arts
  • Assist with monitoring and addressing compliance concerns relative to the requirements of law, rule, and safety
  • Assist with annual inspections and related maintenance of kilns, art equipment and physical learning environments
  • Assist with an equitable balance of resources and opportunities

 

School and Community Relations

  • Serve in the role of quality control for the program regarding student responses meeting community standards, high quality response for exhibition and competition
  • Assist in planning and management of district wide, region and state art events, including but not limited to festivals, shows, contests, and community needs
  • Serve as liaison between department and community organizations
  • Provide effective and timely responses to all forms of communication

Other Duties As Assigned

  • Performs all job related duties as assigned and in accordance to the Board rules, policies and regulations. All employees are expected to comply with lawful directives in rare situations driven by need where a team effort is required. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Knowledge of curriculum and staff development topics that align with state and district standards, frameworks and assessments required.
  • Knowledge of organizing Visual Art shows/exhibits and the ability to support District Visual Art Program events preferred.
  • Evidence of strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills necessary to communicate in a diverse educational environment with students, staff, parents, and community patrons required.
  • Evidence of artistic ability, knowledge, and artistic talent through portfolio.
  • Ability to use software to create spreadsheets, databases, and do word processing.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and creativity in making decisions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

     

Travel Requirements

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

 

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse
  • Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
  • Environment: Work is performed in an office setting; may require occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions

 

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor Degree, Art Education or closely related field required, Master Degree preferred.
  • Certification/License: Texas Art Certification
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 7 years of successful teaching experience in visual arts or relative experience in the field
    • Evidence of leadership (offices held/memberships) � local, regional, state and national preferred.
    • Workshop/Staff Development Presentations � local, regional, state and national preferred.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in 3D art media (sculpture, ceramics, installation, mixed media, or similar)
    • Proven experience writing curriculum, units, lessons, and assessments
    • Proficiency in Mac operations, including iWork, Google Workspace, Canva, and Adobe Creative Suite (preferred)
