Bargaining Unit: AEA
Work Year: 185 days, 12 contract payments
FTE: Full time, 1.0 FTE
Salary: B00/00 to B72/08 ($61,454 to $88,919), DOE


Job Summary
The Teacher Expert Professional Development supports professional learning in alignment with the Anchorage School District's mission, goals, and guardrails. The expert works with the Professional Learning Team to collaborate with educators, principals, district administrators, DEED, and universities to implement strategies that effectively achieve those objectives. This position reports to and is evaluated by the senior director of Teaching and Learning, or designee. The position has a flexible calendar for starting or ending work up to four weeks before or after the school year.

This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of workdays is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

Job Requirements
The following are required:

  1. A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.
  2. Three or more years of experience in K-12 education.

The following are preferred:

  1. Successful experience creating and coordinating professional development.
  2. Experience with educator onboarding, induction, and mentoring.
  3. Experience in a large and culturally diverse school district.
  4. Proficiency in adult learning theory and strategies.
  5. Evidence of strong communication and collaboration skills.
  6. Proficiency in time planning and management.
  7. Flexible, with strong organizational skills.
  8. Evidence of proficient skills in technology that support planning, management, and professional learning, for example Canvas or other learning management systems, Zoom, or Google Suite.


 Essential Job Functions

  1. Consults with district departments to support professional development implementation, including integration of adult learning strategies and best practices.
  2. Supports professional learning activities throughout the district.
  3. Develops, grows, and leads the new-to-district educators onboarding and induction support and programs such as ASD Teacher Apprentice Program, mentoring and building induction liaison programs, New Educator Symposium, etc., via the creation of course materials, curriculum, and professional learning facilitation for various support programs.
  4. Collaborates with district departments, sponsors, and educational providers to coordinate and organize the development and implementation of the ASD Teacher Apprentice Program.
  5. Keeps current on research and best practices around mentoring, coaching, professional learning, and adult learning strategies by participating in educational learning opportunities, reading professional publications, and participating in professional organizations.
  6. Collaborates with the Professional Learning Team to support the district's professional learning plan and vision.
  7. Collects, analyzes, and presents data to determine educators' needs and goals.
  8. Establishes procedures for practical situations and makes decisions or develops recommendations for system improvements.
  9. Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of management, supervision, and other ASD personnel.
  10. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships.


Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
