Job Description

Career Counselor

Primary Purpose:

This position is responsible for positively impacting student involvement and achievement in K-12 programs. The job was established to provide support to the instructional process with specific responsibility for managing the career learning plans, career advisement and parental career development activities, and Career Exploration, Exposure, and Immersion opportunities for students including industry certifications, Work-Based Learning Opportunities, Dual Credit and Dual Enrollment, and other responsibilities as outlined by administration.

Qualifications:
Education/Licensure:
Bachelor's degree/Master's degree (preferred)
Valid Tennessee Counseling License
Demonstrated competency in the Counseling and Career Focused subject area

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of career and technical education subject assigned
General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Ability to oversee student field experiences in career area assigned
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience:
Counseling Experience Preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies

Coordinates with teachers, administrators, resource specialists and/or community (e.g. service clubs, courts, child protective services, etc.) for the purpose of providing/receiving requested information and/or making recommendations within the Kindergarten to Job Career Development Plan for the district.
Counsels students, parents, and guardians for the purpose of enhancing student success, academically, socially, and emotionally, within the Career Cluster areas.
Develops a variety of special programs and classes (e.g. Career Connection Day, PIE Palooza, Job Shadowing, Biz Town, Senior Interviews, advisory,) for the purpose of providing information to assist students in the successful transition from elementary to middle school and high school to college/career.
Monitors students' progress for the purpose of identifying issues and taking appropriate action for increasing student success.
Prepares a wide variety of materials (e.g. lesson plans, quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, audits, CTE SSQI Reports etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
Presents information for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
Schedules student classes on a variety of topics for the purpose of helping students academically, socially and emotionally reach success in school.
Supervises assigned programs (e.g. scholarships, peer counseling, special education, ESL, etc.) for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing for professional growth and achieving overall curriculum objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Develop career services programs that will help student in exploring and planning career options.
  • Work with students on their needs for career development.
  • Conduct trainings, workshops, lectures, presentations, and other events to develop career planning and employability skills for students.
  • Develop positive working relationship with faculty, administrators and co-workers to achieve desired goals.
  • Coordinate with school based academic advisors to help students in making career choices based on their academic majors.
  • Research and analyze current employment trends in various industries.
  • Maintain regular contacts with potential employers for new job opportunities. Coordinate programming with Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce and other partnering facilities.
  • Work with CTE teachers and school based advisory committees to educate students on resume building, interview skills, and professionalism.
  • Conduct senior interviews and job shadowing and other career based activities for students.
  • Conduct career awareness events and job fairs for students
  • Execute outreach programs to promote career services among students.
  • Maintain a database of student academic and employment records.

  1. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  2. Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  3. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Other

  1. Comply with federal, state, and local regulations related to the occupational area assigned.
  2. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s).

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer; standard instructional equipment
Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking
Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move text books and classroom equipment
Environment: Work inside, may work inside and outside; regular exposure to noise
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
