Prevention and Intervention Counselor
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Master's degree or higher from a regionally accredited 4-year college/university
- Possession of a standard and valid School Counselor certificate issued by the New Jersey Department of Education.
- Knowledge of substance use prevention, intervention, and referral services; experience working with adolescents preferred
- Training and/or experience in counseling, crisis intervention, and student support services
- Ability to coordinate and facilitate Student Assistance Team (SAT) processes, including identification, intervention, and referral of at-risk students
- Strong collaboration skills with staff, families, and community-based agencies
- Experience in a public school setting preferred
- Student Assistance Coordinator Endorsement is a plus
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Student Assistance Counselor designee is responsible for coordinating prevention, intervention, and referral services related to student wellness and substance use in accordance with guidance from the New Jersey Department of Education.
- Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
- Evaluates student progress in crisis in accordance with district procedures
- Provides intervention, recommendations for referral, and follow-up support for those students who have been identified
- Works in cooperation with treatment facility, counselors, parents, school personnel, and students in developing and following through with the aftercare plan for students placed in residential or outpatient programs.
- Provides individual, small, and/or large group instruction, whenever appropriate, to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and special abilities
- Facilitates conferences with parents to review, discuss, and/or implement appropriate steps and stages of intervention and options.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive environment.
- Promotes a proactive approach for students in abstaining from substance use through the implementation of building and district-wide programs and activities
- Develops and maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Supervises out-of-classroom activities for students during the assigned working day, as required.
- Identifies students' needs and cooperates with other professional staff members
- Communicate with students, parents, and staff members on the individual student's progress and development.
- Maintains confidential records concerning students and student contacts in accordance with federal and state law and Board policy
- Provides monthly and annual summary reports to the Superintendent or designee
- Assists the administration in assessing school substance use programs and procedures
- Assesses the district's prevention/intervention program on an annual basis and makes recommendations
- Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning progress
- Maintains and regularly updates a directory of referral services to be utilized in crisis situations.
Serves as a member of the School Crisis Team
REPORTS TO: Principal
SALARY AND EMPLOYMENT
Salary Range:
Current starting salary range $62,600 -$70,110 as per the 2023-2026 SEA Contract
Employment Period: September 1, 2026 � June 30, 2027
